PART 1
Your review should be broken into the following sections, each with a minimum required wordcount. Please make sure to add headings to differentiate each section:
Introduction (150 words minimum): This should include a general overview of the work as a whole, including listing all major characters, and the central premise of the work.
Synopsis (250 words minimum): This should be an overview of the plot of your piece, explaining how the specific events unfold in the story and what happens to the major characters. You should cover the piece from beginning to end, and will have to choose what details to explain fully.
Strengths: (250 words minimum): This is where you will list the positive aspects of the work, and what it does well. Please note that the strengths should be appropriate for your piece. For example, if you are discussing an action movie, you could talk about the fight choreography or camera work. You could also talk about the music that backs a certain scene or a scene which stands out in a particular way.
Weaknesses: (200 words minimum): What are the areas where the piece struggles? Is there anything that could have been done better or that you have seen done better in other works? Remember to give examples and use specific language.
Final Evaluation: (150 words minimum): This is where you will give your final evaluation of the piece, giving your final thoughts as well as what you consider to be the major takeaways from the piece as a whole. In this section, rather than giving thoughts on specific events, you will describe the piece more broadly.
PART 2
Which should be completed after writing the critical review. For this paper, I would like you to write a 300-400 word response reflecting on the process of your critical review. Please answer the following prompts over the course of your response:
- What was the reason you chose the topic you did for your critical review? What about that piece stood out to you most?
- Did you run into any difficulties reading something with a critical eye as opposed to watching/reading it for entertainment?
- Was it harder to find positives or negatives with your piece? How come?
This is a personal assignment, so it may be written in first person. It should be done after completing the first part of the assignment.
