For this assignment, you will research specific information about a particular Communication Disorder, using reputable sources.  You will synthesize the information into a written essay, following the guidelines provided.

Directions

1. Select one of these Communication Disorders:
   • Acquired Apraxia of Speech
   • Childhood Apraxia of Speech
   • Dysarthria in adults: Spastic and Flaccid
   • Autism Spectrum Disorder
   • Specific Language Impairment (also called Developmental Language Disorder, Spoken Language Disorder)
   • Fluency Disorder/Stuttering
   • Voice Disorders: Vocal Nodules
   • Speech Sound Disorders: Articulation and Phonology
2. Find Reputable Sources.  There must be at least four.
   • Required sources: 
     • The course textbook (Essentials of Communication Sciences & Disorders, by Paul T. Fogle) AND
     • www.asha.org/practice-portal/Links to an external site. AND
     • the DSM-5 or other Medical encyclopedia AND
     • one other source, which must be from a professional publication or research institution
3. Research the following information:
   • Incidence and Prevalence
   • Signs and Symptoms
   • Method(s) of Diagnosis/Assessment
   • Evidence-Based Treatments
4. Synthesize your information into a written Division essay about the disorder.  A Division essay is a type of report that examines a topic by breaking it down into components and then analyzing the components related to a central theme.  
   • Your topic is the disorder you selected.  The components are the information you were asked to research above.  The central theme is how this disorder relates to the field of Speech-Language Pathology.  Therefore, the title of your essay will be: “Fill-in-the-blank Disorder and Its Relationship to Speech-Language Pathology”
   • Use the following Division Headings in your paper (But you will not use ALL CAPS).
     • STATEMENT OF PURPOSE (This is the introduction and should include a reference to the theme – why is it important for professionals in our field to know about this disorder?)
     • INCIDENCE AND PREVALENCE (How many times is this diagnosed annually? What percentage of the population has this disorder? Is there any specific segment of the population this occurs in?)
     • SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS (What are the specific speech- or language-related signs and symptoms of this disorder? Are there signs in other areas of function that co-occur with this disorder?)
     • METHOD(S) OF DIAGNOSIS/ASSESSMENT (Briefly describe the relevant components of assessment used to diagnose this disorder. Include at least one current, specific test battery or tool by name)
     • EVIDENCE-BASED TREATMENTS (Briefly describe the main goals for treatment and at least one treatment approach or program by name)
     • CONCLUSION (Connect to the introduction and to the theme.)
     • WORKS CITED (This is a separate page, at the end of the essay.)
       • Use APA formatting
   • 5-7 pages of written work (5 min, 7 max). 12-point font, 1-inch margins, double-spaced.
     • The Title page and the References page are additional and do not count toward the page minimum.
     • Spelling, grammar, objective writing, and proofreading are important. 
     • Consider adding tables, charts, or other visual material to help support the information (visuals must be of your own creation, or properly attributed to the original source as well as the source re-publishing or reproducing them, if applicable).
       • Only approximately 20% of the page space should be occupied by visual supports for the entire essay.
