One meaning of the word “nature,”
as is referenced in early American literature, is an entirety, a culmination of
all that surrounds us. This meaning is inclusive, extending from our
surrounding landscapes to trees, plants, animals, light and darkness—the
natural world; everything but humanity’s synthesized products or
creations. A second definition for nature may be the very glue that
holds us all together, or our inherent or intrinsic natures, who we are, how we
do things in this life, and so on. Select any one of your reading
assignments and explain how it describes human nature and the
natural world.
