The final paper will be a comparative essay. The comparative essay will be a written comparison of the possible causative factors seen in the book, “A Child Called It” with the main character in the book and a list of causative
factors that are in the book.

Your assignment is to write a comparative essay comparing the causative factors of Emotional Behavioral Disorders (from your textbook)
that you see in the book by Dave Pelzer. The causative factors you will use are the biological factors, the family factors, the school
factors, and the cultural factors. You may use your book and the internet to read about the factors that influence the
development of Emotional/Behavioral Disorders.
A comparative essay comprises many paragraphs explaining how two subjects are related. These essays mainly
compare and contrast various aspects of the subjects in question.
We will look at the causative factors of emotional/behavioral disorders and compare them to incidences in Dave
Pelzner’s life story.
The causative factors include;
• Biological factors can include genetics, brain damage, malnutrition, temperament, allergies, etc.
• Family factors- family interaction, pressure from family, family definition, abuse, etc.
• School factors include achievement, intelligence, social skills, inappropriate teacher expectations, insensitivity to students, etc.
• Cultural factors – conflicting cultural values, mass media, peer group, neighborhood, social class, poverty, etc.
I would suggest that as you go through the book, you keep a list of things in the story that you think may fall into
one of these categories.
