Mario Vargas Llosa’s The Storyteller begins as a realistic first-person narrative with easily recognizable characters, places, and events. But, as the second chapter begins, things change: “After, the men of earth started walking, straight toward the sun that was falling. Before, they too stood in the same place without moving. The sun, their eye of the sky, was fixed. Wide awake, always open, looking at us, warming the world. Its light was very strong, but Tasurinchi could withstand it.” Who are these characters, where are they, and what is happening? Who is narrating the story now? Perhaps even more important, to what extent can we be sure of any answers to these questions?
