I wrote about in my annotated bibliography that in “Nobody Writes to the Colonel”, the colonel is trying to get his pension he was promised for his service in the civil war, while in “Bright and Morning Star”, Sue is working to organize Black workers to fight against their exploitation by white landowners. The characters and goals of the two stories’ protagonists are different. Sue is a young lady who is dedicated to working for the rights of Black workers, in contrast to the colonel who is an elderly guy who has given up on life and has lost faith in the government all he really wants is his pension. The connective tissue between these two novels is the presence of oppressive systems that deny individuals their basic human rights and dignity. In both novels, the struggles are tied to larger social and political issues that affect entire communities. Despite the differences in their historical and fictional contexts, these novels share a common thread of oppressive systems that deny individuals their basic human rights.
The article Pondering the sublime dignity of all humans.(struggling against systemic oppression) by Graham William reflects the concept of mortal quality and its relationship to systemic oppression. Graham contends that all individuals retain essential qualities, which are hampered by oppressive systems that bestialize and exemplify people. He contends that feting and affirming mortal quality can be an effective tool for resisting oppression and promoting justice. The composition emphasizes the importance of empathy in the fight against oppression, as well as working to create a world in which all individuals are treated with dignity and respect.
The authors of Richard Wright’s Bright and Morning Star, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Nothing Writes to the Colonel, and Graham’s composition all argue that rough systems that bestialize people jeopardize the quality of all individuals. The feedback I got from my professor was too To repeat what I said in class: this is a good beginning. What will help you write this paper, and research this paper, is to specify the systems of oppression that you refer to in your proposal. Both texts have a different yet similar system in place––they are both under a quasi-colonial capitalism, for example. However, Wright’s story has a severe racial caste system whereas Marquez’s story has a post-revolutionary corruption in place. My suggestion is to do some research into “sharecropper capitalism” in Wright’s case and relate it to Marquez’s “corrupt hacienda system.” Something of this order will give a great analytical framework for your reading of the bestializing effects of oppression on the characters.
