Your essay must be in 3rd Person Point of View.
• Your essay must have a title that creatively introduces an essay to readers
o Include Rhetorical Mode with the Title (Exemplification: Life Before Social Media)
• The essay must have at least five well-developed paragraphs
• It must have 950-1000 words
• The introduction must have an attention-getting hook and effectively introduce your
thesis statement
• The thesis must be the last sentence of the introduction
• Each body paragraph must have an easily identifiable topic sentence, major and minor
details, transition words and phrases that correspond to the rhetorical strategy that you
are following, and a concluding sentence
• The conclusion must illustrate that you have thought critically and analytically about the
topic. It should NOT simply restate your intro paragraph. The conclusion should tell the
reader why he/she should care about your paper.
o Why is it important to you as the writer or to me as the reader? What information
should you or I take away from this? The conclusion should create a sense of
movement to a more complex understanding of the subject of your paper. By the
end of your essay, you should have worked through your ideas enough so that
your reader understands what you have discussed and is ready to hear the larger
point (i.e. the “so what”) you want to make about your topic.
