Argumentative essay
Goals:
• for students to take a clear stand on a debated topic
• to address multiple perspectives on that topic, including those they disagree with
• to effectively use credible, primarily scholarly research in order to support that stand
• to write a cohesive, clear essay that follows APA citation.
Format:
• All assignments must follow APA 7th edition guidelines the title page and running header. Follow this example: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/general_format.html
• Use a standard size 12 font.
• Double-space the entire document.
• Save as a doc or docx file.
• Don’t include an abstract.
APA: Use the appropriate citation depending on whether you quote, paraphrase, or summarize, and include a Reference page.
Word count:
• Write a 2000-2500 word essay.
• If you’re significantly above or below that word count, you’ll lose points.
• That word count refers to the body of the essay and does not include the title page or the Reference page.
1) Transition from a research question into forming an argument. Form that argument into a clear, concise, detailed thesis statement.
2) Write an argumentative essay, using that thesis statement as your main focus.
3) Your thesis statement should be about a specific, narrowed-down aspect of the research theme for this semester, and should adopt a clear stance as to how to address that issue. It should also take into account the pros and cons of that recommendation.
4) The thesis statement should be located in the introduction, and the rest of the paper should support it.
5) You should support that argument with credible, up-to-date sources and rely when possible on scholarly sources.
6) Your paper should include an introduction paragraph, body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.
Additional information
Writing: Avoid using I-statements, focus on supporting your claims with sources instead of personal experiences or opinions, and use formal language (ie. Standard English).
