This is Research Essay
Length:
• 1200-1350 words, approximately
• Double-spaced, font 12 Times New Roman
Formatting Guidelines:
· The essay (both first and final drafts) must be typed in Times New Roman 12, double spaced throughout with one-inch margin all around.
· The student’s name, course number and section, instructor’s last name, and due date must appear at the top left-hand corner only of the first page of the essay.
· A relevant and interesting essay title should appear centered only once on the first page between the introduction and the student information described above. A separate title page is not required.
· Student’s last name and page number should appear in a header box on the top right-hand corner of every page.
The Final Essay Assignment and Guidelines:
● Close-Reading Requirement: your must demonstrate your ability to closely engage the literary devices found in the literary text (or texts) to convince your audience that your argument is valid and reasonable.
● Source Requirement for the final essay: You must use at least four credible secondary sources to complement your own argument. Of the four minimum required sources, at least two must be scholarly or peer reviewed journal articles, while the other two could be academic book chapters. You may use no more than two credible popular sources above and beyond the minimum requirement. You should be looking for sources of the following types:
-book chapters or journal articles that are about some aspect of the literary text your chosen topic is based on, or that are about other texts written by the same author(s).
-biographies of the authors that also discuss their works.
-historians’ accounts and analyses of important historical events mentioned in the literary text.
Depending on which of the topics below you choose to research, you may have to use both literary criticism and historical/biographical sources, or you may find yourself using only one kind.
Caution: Do not use “pure” psychology, sociology, or political science sources to write the final essay assignment. Instead, use the above types.
Wikipedia or other similar anonymous and “free” internet sources are not allowed. Use sources found through the University of Alberta Libraries catalogues or the databases available on the U of A Libraries homepage instead.
● Ratio between Your Own Ideas vs. Borrowed ideas: You must demonstrate your ability to use ideas borrowed from the critics and experts without letting them eclipse your own arguments. In other words, the majority (60%-70%) of the finished essay should consist of your own arguments about and analysis of the literary text. Directly quoted or paraphrased ideas from the secondary sources must not constitute more than 30%-40% of the final draft.
● Citation Requirement: You must demonstrate your ability to cite all the sources used in your essay correctly according to the MLA style.
The Audience:
You are writing the essay for the professor as well as your classmates who have also read the same literary text (or texts) that you are writing about. Although they have read the same text(s), they may have different takes on it—ranging from slightly different to very different—, and, therefore, they expect you to convince them that your reading is also reasonable and well-supported.
Formatting Guidelines: failure to follow any one of these guidelines will result in mark deductions of up to 5%.
