This is my thesis idea:<\/div>\n

The story and romance of the California missions and Junipero Serra have buried story\/stories that are coming to light today. How does this change how the public is informed and how the history of the California missions and Junipero Serra are to be taught and remembered? The California missions were a place where Native Americans had a different story that currently is not centrally revealed to the general public. I think that archaeology can help reveal and provide another story less revealed. <\/div>\n

Historical Archaeology: A Global Perspective Research Paper Guidelines
 
Suggestions for writing your paper:
\u2022 Your paper should be a research paper focusing on a topic directly related to Historical Archaeological
themes raised in class or in the assigned readings. I strongly encourage you to come see us in office hours
or make an appointment to discuss possible topics.
\u2022 The paper should be in the style of an analytical  research  paper, not  a  report. That means, pose an
interesting question, do the appropriate research or data collection, and then answer it.  
\u2022 The research can have a methodological, theoretical, topical, or regional focus. I encourage you to obtain as
much primary data as possible. If your study is dependent on secondary sources then try to obtain differing
viewpoints and interpretations derived from the same body of data.  
\u2022 When searching out a topic consider looking at historical archaeology websites, CRM reports, books,
journal articles databases, and collections (however, see below regarding using websites as sources).
\u2022 Make sure to carefully proof-read your paper.   
\u2022 Come talk to me early if you need assistance with a paper topic.
 
Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
\u2022 Compare and contrast how history and archaeology contribute to our understanding of a particular site:
Puerto Real, York, Elmina, etc.
\u2022 Archaeology and legends \u2013 e.g. Icelandic Sagas, King Arthur, the Founding Fathers, Thanksgiving, etc.
\u2022 Research AND visit one or more of the many and varied historical sites in Northern California: Ghost
towns, Spanish Adobes, American Period Sites, Mining Sites, Forts, or Historic Communities.
\u2022 Describe archaeological contributions to our understanding of a particularly poorly documented people.
\u2022 Investigate the history of your\/an neighborhood in a material culture perspective.  
\u2022 Conduct a study on some class of material culture and what can be learned from it; be it Ceramics, Glass,
Metal, Beads, Architecture, Plant remains, Faunal remains, Tombstones or any other appropriate material.
\u2022 How does archaeology contribute to our understanding of emerging global trading networks (silk route,
slave trade, fur trade, western gold rush, etc.)?
\u2022 Can archaeology contribute to our understanding of migration in the recent past?
\u2022 Any other topic of relevance to the class and of interest to you.
 
Paper Requirements:
\u2022 The paper should be typed in 12 pt Times New Roman font, double-spaced and 15-18 page in length, not
including references or images.  
\u2022 Provide a bibliography of books and articles you use and cite them appropriately throughout.  Refer to the
AAA style guide for appropriate citation format (on Canvas).   
\u2022 Absolutely  no  online  sources  are  permissible  as  references  in  your  final  papers,  save  peer-reviewed
journal articles accessible through an online repository such as JSTOR.  If you are in doubt, ask.
\u2022 Only Microsoft Word or PDF formatted papers will be accepted.  
\u2022 Indicate at the top of the first page if you would like to receive comments back on your paper.   
\u2022 All late papers will be marked down at the rate of one grade per day late.
