Main Claim<\/a><\/th>\nThe main claim<\/a> is the thesis<\/a> of your argument\u00e2\u20ac\u201cthe overall stance your paper is taking. The claim<\/a> is debatable, should be complex, and must be paired with ideas and evidence<\/a> to support it. Essentially, it is both your main point and the reasons for arguing and what you hope your audience<\/a> will see. The main claim<\/a> addresses: what are you trying to demonstrate?<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Reasons\/Points<\/th>\nThe reasons, in many ways, are the second part of your claim<\/a>. Developing and clearly articulating the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153reasons\u00e2\u20ac\ufffd for your position is key to developing your argument. As you can imagine a well-articulated claim<\/a> + reasons will drive your argument.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Warrant
(the Bridge)<\/p>\n<\/th>\n		A sentence or two that explains the reason. In other words, a general principle that explains why you think your evidence<\/a> is relevant to your claim<\/a>. The warrant addresses: why you think your evidence<\/a> supports your claim<\/a>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Evidence<\/a><\/th>\n\n

The evidence<\/a> (data or grounds) is evidence<\/a> you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve collected to support your claim<\/a> and reasons. The evidence<\/a> addresses: what proof do you have?<\/p>\n

* The development of your argumentative essay (later in the course) can be organized by reasons with each reason having a warrant and evidence<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Counterclaim<\/th>\nThis is where you illustrate that you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re familiar with what the opposition claims<\/a>. (Be sure to explore each counterpoint, gathering source information to fully understand why people hold that position and to more fully evaluate the counterargument<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Rebuttal<\/th>\nWhile you will always consider the opposition\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s point of view<\/a>, do not hesitate to reiterate the points that support your claim<\/a>. The rebuttal functions as a reiteration of your evidence<\/a> in support of your claim<\/a>. Be sure to always make a clear connection between the rebuttal, your claim<\/a> and the evidence<\/a> that points in your direction.<\/p>\n

*Counterclaims and rebuttals can appear anywhere in the essay you will develop later in the course.
