    Your paper should be about <\/span><\/span>5-6 pages (1500 words) <\/span><\/span>double-spaced, in black, 12- point <\/span><\/span>Times New Roman <\/span><\/span>font, with one inch margins. <\/span><\/span>Indicate the word tally on the cover of the paper<\/span>. Only <\/span><\/span>paper <\/span><\/span>submissions are accepted. <\/span><\/span>No electronic submissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    The paper should be a discussion of the question given by the instructor. It should contain a <\/span><\/span>\u201cthesis statement\u201d <\/span><\/span>(about two or three lines maximum) in which you indicate the position you will be developing in the paper. The bulk of the paper should then contain a discussion of your thesis, i.e., how you answer the question.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Specifically, your paper should contain the following: (1) a specific and identifiable thesis statement; (2) a coherent and consistent argument that does not merely repeat class lectures but reveals independent thinking and proves your thesis; (3) concrete evidence <\/span><\/span>from the text <\/span><\/span>in support of your argument, <\/span><\/span>with reference (in brackets)<\/span>; (4) proper formal written style (i.e. no spelling\/grammar mistakes, no informal language, etc.)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Papers <\/span><\/span>must quote <\/span><\/span>from the primary sources used in class. <\/span><\/span>Papers without quotations from the primary sources (with precise page references) will receive a failing grade<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n
