There are two questions that need to be answered. Each answer<\/span> <\/span>should be a single well<\/span>–<\/span>organized paragraph of<\/span> <\/span>250<\/span>–<\/span>300 words<\/span> <\/span>(+ \/<\/span> <\/span>–<\/span>
25 words is acceptable). Edit your answers carefully so that you make the best use possible of<\/span>
your limited word count.<\/span> <\/span>This part of the assignment<\/span> <\/span>will be<\/span> <\/span>two<\/span> <\/span>paragraphs and total 500 <\/span>
words. <\/span><\/p>\n

First part\/  Description: What does the text look like?<\/u><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n
 <\/span>Your answer to this question should address<\/span> <\/span>in one coherent paragraph<\/span> <\/span>the aspects of<\/span> <\/span>how<\/span> a<\/span> poem<\/span> <\/span>is written that we<\/span> <\/span>have studied in class<\/span>\u2014<\/span>such as<\/span> <\/span>diction, tone, point of view, figurative <\/span>language<\/span>, form,<\/span> <\/span>and<\/span> <\/span>rhythm.<\/span> <\/span>This paragraph will offer a more comprehensive overview than your <\/span>annotations, though there can and should be some overlap in your points and examples<\/span>; it should <\/span>describe the<\/span> <\/span>whole<\/span> <\/span>poem, not just your selected lines.<\/span><\/span>As with your annotations, t<\/span>hink about how to group elements and examples<\/span> <\/span>together so that you <\/span>can address them in<\/span> <\/span>clear<\/span> <\/span>unifying statements about how the poem is writte<\/span>n. <\/span>For example, \u201cIn<\/span><\/div>\n

this poem, there are many words that belong to the semantic field of [X], such as\u201d (and then<\/span>
quote<\/span> <\/span>a couple of specific<\/span> <\/span>examples<\/span>); or, \u201cphrases like [X] and [Y] establish a formal [or<\/span>
colloquial, or angry, or sarcastic, or …] tone;\u201d or, \u201cWe can tell from [X] and [Y] that this poem<\/span>
is written from [Z] point of view<\/span>\u201d; or<\/span> <\/span>There are several repeated lines\/words\/images in the<\/span>
poem<\/span>; the most important of them is [X]<\/span>.\u201d These mock sentences are intended simply as models<\/span>
of the<\/span> <\/span>kind<\/span> <\/span>of analysis<\/span> <\/span>you<\/span> <\/span>should make, not of<\/span> <\/span>exactly<\/span> <\/span>the points you will make<\/span>!<\/span><\/span><\/span>
This paragraph should convincingly show that you have paid close attention to<\/span> <\/span>how<\/span> <\/span>the poem is<\/span>
written<\/span>\u2014<\/span>to details of its language, literary elements, and f<\/b>orm. In other words, this paragraph<\/span>
demonstrates the results of your<\/span> <\/span>close reading<\/span> <\/span>of the poem<\/span>, as also reflected in your annotations<\/span><\/span>

Second part \/<\/b> <\/span>Interpretation: What is the text about?<\/u><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n

Your answer to this question should address the poem\u2019s<\/span> <\/span>theme<\/span>, as distinct from its<\/span> <\/span>subject<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
After reflecting on your close reading and on the insights you gained from studying the elements<\/span>
you<\/span> <\/span>examined in your annotations and<\/span> <\/span>discuss<\/span>ed more broadly<\/span> <\/span>in Question 1, explain in your<\/span>
own words what you think is one of the poem\u2019s central themes and why you think that.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
Keep in mind the point made in our<\/span> <\/span>Broadview Introduction to Literature<\/span> <\/span>that a \u201ctheme\u201d is not a<\/span>
topic (love, family, or war, for instance) but is<\/span> <\/span>\u201can idea about or attitude toward the<\/span>
subject matter\u201d<\/span> <\/span>(xxv). What do you think your poem, as a whole, is<\/span> <\/span>saying<\/span> <\/span>to us about the<\/span>
things it talks about<\/span>\u2014<\/span>based on the<\/span> <\/span>way<\/span> <\/span>it talks about them? You should include at least two<\/span>
quotations that you think are particularly important to your interpretation, being sure to explain<\/span>
how they support your reading.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
Again, there will be some overlap with your annotations (where you may have alluded to<\/span>
themes), but your discussion here should draw the elements together.<\/span> <\/span>This paragraph<\/span>
demonstrates your ability to develop an<\/span> <\/span>interpretation<\/span> <\/span>from your close reading of the poem.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
