Research Essay:  Local Issues<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Overview:  <\/span><\/strong>Your task is to choose  a local issue that is important to you and provide a well-researched argument about the topic.  Your thesis must present a claim about the topic that is debatable.   <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Requirements:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The essay should be at least 1200<\/strong> <\/span>words<\/strong> <\/span>in length. The Works Cited page does not count in this total.<\/span><\/p>\n

Make sure that you have <\/span>a <\/span><\/strong>strong, argumentative thesis <\/span><\/strong>statement that clearly lays out what you will discuss in your paper.<\/span><\/p>\n

Use the <\/span>scholarly tone <\/span><\/strong>for writing a formal paper.<\/span><\/p>\n

Support your argument with <\/span>evidence from your research<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Include proper <\/span>MLA in-text citations and Work(s) Cited<\/strong> <\/span>page<\/span><\/p>\n

You must have at least <\/span>four<\/strong> <\/span>sources<\/strong> <\/span>for your essay.<\/span><\/p>\n

You must have a <\/span>variety of source mediums<\/strong>. The sources must be evaluated for strength. <\/span><\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong>  All work submitted must be original. If you need help understanding plagiarism, please check out some of the material under content or ask me directly.  You can not submit work that has previously been submitted for another class. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Topic:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>Choose a topic that is culturally, socially, and\/or politically relevant to the local community\u2013 one that matters to you. Start by looking in your local community (neighborhood, school, local business, etc.) to see if you can find an issue to raise and\/or a problem for which you think you could find a solution. Your thesis will be grounded in the local solution, but you may rely on national data to support your claims. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>This means that you should begin this process early by becoming familiar with current events in the local, national and\/or global discourse.  Although you will have considerable freedom to select the issue, we will work together to ensure that your topic will work for this assignment.  You must also be able to make a clear, well-supported argument, which critically and intelligently states your opinions on the subject.  Be specific and concise in asserting your position. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Topic categories: education, tourism, transportation, environmental issues\/impacts, public health, housing, etc. You could also consider a larger\/national\/global issue as it applies locally. <\/span><\/p>\n

When planning a persuasive argument, follow these steps:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
