\nChoose a social or political issue that has been subject to public debate and
\ndisagreement in recent years. Take a clear position on that issue, and defend that
\nposition with a strong, well-developed, and well-explained set of reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nrange of possible issues to discuss is too wide to capture in a single list.
\nSome examples of suitable issues include: abortion, euthanasia, the death
\npenalty, affirmative action, regulation of firearms, animal rights,
\nmarijuana\/drug policy, same-sex marriage, transgender rights, immigration
\npolicy\/DACA\/DAPA, access to health care, and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

A few
\nexamples of positions on these issues might be: \u201cWomen have the right to control
\ntheir own reproductive systems, which includes the choice to end an unwanted
\npregnancy\u201d; \u201cAll humans, including unborn humans, have the right to life, and
\nthat makes abortion immoral\u201d; \u201cEquality requires that universities consider the
\nracial and ethnic background of applicants when deciding whom to admit\u201d; \u201cGun
\ncontrol measures are ineffective and violate the fundamental American right to
\nown firearms\u201d; and so on.

\nBe sure that your paper\u2019s topic fits the topic of this assignment. If it does
\nnot the paper is guaranteed to receive a low grade. Feel free to consult with
\nthe instructor on your topic to make sure that it is suitable for this
\nassignment. <\/span><\/p>\n

In the
\nessay\u2019s introductory paragraph, introduce the issue to the reader and state
\nyour position in the form of a thesis statement. Defend your position
\nthroughout the body of the essay. Each body paragraph should develop and focus
\non a clear reason, or premise, in support of your position. There is no fixed
\nnumber of body paragraphs that your essay should have; the number of paragraphs
\ndepends upon the number of reasons you offer in support of your position.
\nHowever, you must have a minimum of three premises to support your conclusion,
\nwhich means that you must have a minimum of three body paragraphs. Finish the
\nessay with a conclusion paragraph that sums up what was discussed in the essay.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is
\nan argumentative essay: the point for this essay is to develop a thoughtful,
\noriginal, strong, well-reasoned argument in support of your position. There are
\nno minimum research requirements for Essay 1, though you will likely need to
\nconduct research to find evidence to support at least some of your points. <\/span><\/p>\n

All uses of outside research must be carefully documented
\nthrough proper citation. Papers that do not contain proper citation and
\ndocumentation of all sources and when they are used will not be accepted. The in-text citations and the works cited

Essay Guidelines<\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Each essay needs an introductory paragraph<\/i>. This
\nparagraph briefly introduces your subject to the reader, and it ends with your thesis
\nstatement<\/i>. The thesis is the point that you are trying to get across with
\nyour essay. The entire essay can be seen, in a sense, as support for your
\nthesis; anything in the essay that does not help support your thesis is not
\nrelevant and should not be included in your essay. Also, the essay should end
\nwith a conclusion<\/i> paragraph that reiterates your thesis, and summarizes
\nwhat you’ve said in your paper to support your thesis. The conclusion paragraph
\nshould contain no new points.<\/p>\n



\nUse your own words. When using research, quotes should be sparingly used. They are
\nappropriate to accentuate a particular point, particularly if a writer\u2019s words
\nare themselves unique or particularly well-constructed, and they can be
\nnecessary as textual evidence to support your account. But do not rely on
\nquotes to do the work of summarizing and explaining. <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Remember that your essay is a composition. Pay attention to
\nthe presentation of points. Be sure that each paragraph logically follows from
\nwhat precedes it. (And be sure that each paragraph has one clearly identifiable
\ntopic.) The essay should read like one organic whole, not like a series of
\nparts.

\nBe careful not to assume unreasonable prior knowledge on the part of the reader
\nof your essay. <\/p>\n

All sources must be
\nidentified by a works cited page, and each time you refer to a source or rely
\nupon ideas from a source, you must cite that use, including specific page
\nnumbers if applicable, in the text of the essay where you are using that
\nsource. If you use an outside source and do not do these two things, the paper
\nwill either not be counted as credit for the assignment, or it will receive a
\nlow grade. Furthermore, the paper may be seen as an example of plagiarism \u2013
\nusing someone else\u2019s work and passing it off as your own \u2013 and will receive a
\n\u201c0\u201d and may result in further disciplinary actions. The in-text citations and
\nthe works cited page should be in MLA format.<\/span><\/p>\n

Always remember to use sufficient detail in explaining
\npoints. Do not raise a point that needs explanation or discussion without
\nsubsequently explaining\/discussing it.<\/p>\n
