Guidelines<\/span>
A critical essay falls between a theoretical essay and movie review.<\/span> <\/span>Unlike a<\/span> <\/span>movie<\/span> <\/span>review, this kind<\/span>
of essay presumes that the reader has seen or is at least familiar with the film being discussed,<\/span>
although the reader might not have thought extensively about it. Therefore, you might want to take<\/span>
the time to remind your reader of key th<\/span>emes and elements of the plot. However, a lengthy retelling<\/span>
of the story is neither needed nor acceptable.<\/span> <\/span>Y<\/span>our essay should be more focused and specific than a<\/span>
revie<\/span>w as y<\/span>o<\/span>ur role is to reveal to your reader some subtleties or complexities that might have<\/span>
escaped them<\/span> <\/span>upon watching the film<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>To do so, you may<\/span> <\/span>write<\/span> <\/span>about<\/span> <\/span>a short sequence or scene(s).<\/span>
In your essay, you are asked to<\/span> <\/span>put into practice<\/span> <\/span>the work we have done<\/span> <\/span>in class by<\/span> <\/span>analyzing the<\/span>
formal and technical elements of the film to support your argument<\/span> <\/span>regarding<\/span> <\/span>its<\/span> <\/span>subject matter and<\/span>
meaning.<\/span> <\/span>A good analysis will make use of precise vocabulary and terminology.<\/span> <\/span>For this assignment<\/span>
you should write<\/span> <\/span>1,500 words on<\/span> <\/span>one<\/span> <\/span>film and at least<\/span> <\/span>two<\/span> <\/span>readings from the<\/span> <\/span>required<\/span> <\/span>or<\/span> <\/span>supplemental<\/span>
reading lists<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>Additional research is not needed nor recommended.<\/span>
Your e<\/span>ssay should be double spaced, 12<\/span>–<\/span>point Times New Roman font, and should conform to<\/span>

Potential Approaches<\/span>
Writing About Mise<\/span>–<\/span>en<\/span>–<\/span>Sc\u00e8ne<\/span>
Mise<\/span>–<\/span>en<\/span>–<\/span>sc\u00e8ne<\/span> <\/span>roughly translates to \u201cwhat is put in the scene\u201d or what is put before the camera. This<\/span>
approach asks you to reflect on all the properties of the cinematic image that exists independently of<\/span>
camera position, camera movement, and editing<\/span>\u2014<\/span>although<\/span> <\/span>all<\/span> <\/span>these elements find themselves united<\/span>
in a single image. Explain to your reader how<\/span> <\/span>and why<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>lighting, costumes, sets, quality of acting,<\/span>
and<\/span> <\/span>other<\/span> <\/span>shapes,<\/span> <\/span>and characters are key in understanding the themes you have<\/span> <\/span>identified<\/span>.<\/span>
Writing About<\/span> <\/span>Cinematography<\/span>
In cinema, it is the camera that films a mise<\/span>–<\/span>en<\/span>–<\/span>sc\u00e8ne. When you watch a film, you not only see the<\/span>
setting, actors, and lighting, but how<\/span> <\/span>all<\/span> <\/span>these elements are recorded and then projected. The<\/span>
composition of the film image influences the way you see a scene or elements within it. The shot is<\/span>
the single image you see on screen before its cuts to a different image. A single shot can include a<\/span>
va<\/span>riety of action and movement, and the frame that contains the image may even move. Explain to<\/span>
your reader how the<\/span> <\/span>two primary dimensions of a shot<\/span>\u2014<\/span>i<\/span>ts photographic<\/span> <\/span>qualities<\/span> <\/span>and its moving<\/span>
frame<\/span>\u2014<\/span>are key in understanding the themes you have identified.<\/span> <\/span>You may reflect on tone, film<\/span>
speed, and the various perspectives created by the image.<\/span><\/p>\n

Writing About Editing<\/span>
In the simplest sense, editing is the linking of two different pieces of film<\/span>\u2014<\/span>two different shots.<\/span>
Usually, the editing follows some logic of development (remember the Kuleshov effect) or is meant<\/span>
to make a statement of some sort. The break between two images is a cut. A shot can be held on<\/span>
screen for any length of time, resulting in the editing pace or<\/span> <\/span>rhythm. In the larger sense, editing<\/span>
refers to how shots are built into larger pieces of a movie and, hence, larger units of meaning.<\/span>
Explain to your reader<\/span> <\/span>what that meaning<\/span> <\/span>is<\/span>. In other words, explain how and why elements of the<\/span>
film\u2019s editing<\/span> <\/span>are<\/span> <\/span>key in understanding<\/span> <\/span>or making sense of<\/span> <\/span>the themes you have identified.<\/span>
Writing About Sound<\/span>
We do not only watch movies; we also listen to them. In theory, sound can be used and edited with<\/span>
as much complexity and intelligence as images can. Sound has many dimensions and uses in film. It<\/span>
can be described according to pitch, loudness, or timbre. We<\/span> <\/span>refer to direct sound to describe what<\/span>
has been recorded with the image and to post<\/span>–<\/span>dubbed sound to describe sound and dialogue added<\/span>
later in the studio. There are many<\/span> <\/span>other<\/span> <\/span>qualities to sound such as whether it is diegetic or not,<\/span>
onscreen or offscreen<\/span>, natural or artificially produced. Film sound can take the form of dialogue,<\/span>
music, or noise.<\/span> <\/span>Film sound can have a multitude of relations to the image and the narrative.<\/span> <\/span>Use<\/span>
this to e<\/span>xplain to your reader how<\/span> <\/span>and why<\/span> <\/span>the film\u2019s sound is key in understanding the themes you<\/span>
