Review a documentary film and take observational research notes that examine rhetorical<\/span>
elements used in the film to construct an argument. Use your observational notes and understanding of<\/span>
rhetorical analysis to construct a thesis-based analysis of the central argument in the film.<\/span>
Medium: A 3 or more page, 750 word, academically formatted composition, using a standard size 11 or 12<\/span>
point font (such as Calibri or Times New Roman).<\/span>
A Documentary Analysis asks you to examine an argument and evaluate the strength of the argument. You will<\/span>
be asked to consider several elements of argument including author credibility, audience appeals, and<\/span>
supporting evidence. Here are some questions to consider when doing rhetorical analysis of this kind:<\/span>
What is the rhetorical situation?<\/span>
\uf0b7 What is the cultural or historical context in which the text\/argument was produced?<\/span>
\uf0b7 What occasion gives rise to the need or opportunity for persuasion?<\/span>
\uf0b7 What kinds of values or customs would the people have that would produce this?<\/span>
Who is the author\/speaker?<\/span>
\uf0b7 How does he or she establish ethos (personal credibility)?<\/span>
\uf0b7 Does he\/she come across as knowledgeable? fair?<\/span>
\uf0b7 Does the speaker’s reputation convey a certain authority?<\/span>
What is the author’s purpose or intention in writing?<\/span>
\uf0b7 To attack or defend? To praise or blame?<\/span>
\uf0b7 To encourage or discourage certain action?<\/span>
\uf0b7 To inform, to delight, or to persuade?<\/span>
Who makes up the audience?<\/span>
\uf0b7 Who is the intended audience?<\/span>
\uf0b7 What values does the audience hold that the author or speaker appeals to?<\/span>
\uf0b7 Who have been or might be secondary audiences?<\/span>
What is the content of the message?<\/span>
\uf0b7 Can you summarize the main idea?<\/span>
\uf0b7 What are the principal lines of reasoning or kinds of arguments used?<\/span>
\uf0b7 How does the author or speaker appeal to reason (logos)? To emotion (pathos)?<\/span>
What is the form in which it is conveyed?<\/span>
\uf0b7 What is the structure of the communication; how is it arranged?<\/span>
\uf0b7 What oral or literary genre is it following?<\/span>
\uf0b7 What effect could the form have, and does this aid or hinder the author’s intention?<\/span>
How is language used?<\/span>

\uf0b7 Does the author use a language unique to a specific discourse community? Technical? Slang?<\/span>
