Students are responsible for writing a three-page critical analysis of the assigned article. The assignment is intended to introduce students to scholarly analysis and critical thinking when reading academic articles. Students are expected to read the article, think about its argument, and reflect on whether the author\u2019s arguments are convincing. Students will first summarize the article (approximately 1page), outlining the key arguments and claims. Students will then analyze the article\u2019s argument, discussing its key claims, the evidence that was used to support them, and any issues that may have been overlooked (approximately 1.5 pages). Students will be graded on the clarity of their argument, their use of evidence from the reading to support their claims (references), and their attention to detail in analyzing the work.<\/p>\n
Introductions to any paper are very important. An introduction needs to include the following points for the article (1\/2 a page, one paragraph in length):<\/p>\n
Background\u2014what is the problem the article is trying to address?
\nQuestion\u2014what question is guiding the author(s) research?
\nThesis statement\u2014what is the author(s) proposed answer to the question they posted?
\nPaper format\u2014how are you organizing this paper (a road map)
\nFormatting the paper: All papers should be typed and double-spaced. Students should format their papers with Times\/Times Roman 12-point font using Microsoft word program. Students should also follow the Chicago Manual of Style (notes and bibliography) Do not add an extra space between paragraphs.
