OVERVIEW:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

This module summarizes the use of ethics in research and the
\nregulations that govern the research process. Various sets of ethical
\nprinciples that guide healthcare practice are described in detail. The four
\ncore ethical principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy and fidelity
\nare defined in the context of ethical decision making in healthcare. There is
\nfocus upon the relationship between the four core values and the Institute of
\nMedicine\u2019s (IOM) core dimensions of quality.<\/span><\/p>\n

The module presents principles that protect the rights of human
\nsubjects. Ethical considerations as they relate to clinical research and
\nevidence-based quality improvement initiatives are described. Similarities and
\ndifferences between research, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement
\nthat have implications for human subjects are identified and discussed. Ethical
\nfoundations that relate to clinical research are described and examples of
\nethical controversies as they relate to evidence-based quality improvement
\ninitiatives are provided. The module concludes with describing the ethical
\nresponsibilities of patients in the process of improving healthcare.<\/span><\/p>\n
