\u2014The article by Newman, which you will use first to define the concept of \u201ctransracial ideal\u201d and later use in your argument. [PLEASE NOTE: Although Jeter himself is biracial, it is not necessary for someone to be biracial to be transracial if the definition of transracial is someone who has appeal across racial lines. For example, LeBron James is not biracial, but he is considered to have transracial appeal as reflected in advertising, film roles, etc.]<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014The other readings in this unit (by Coogan, Alexander, Phillips, and Espada) discuss instances of race and sports and how race is \u201cframed\u201d through sports (e.g., Is the racial <\/span><\/p>\n

framing described in these past cases still present today?).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014Your personal observations of contemporary sports commentary (e.g., Is racial \u201cframing.\u201d still present in sports commentary, or has it progressed to a race-blind state? How does that observation support your answer to the main question of this paper?).<\/span><\/p>\n


<\/p>\n

\u2014Any outside research you wish to conduct. You are not required to do research for this paper, but you may conduct light research if needed. Any research should take up minimal space in the paper. Your emphasis should be on the arguments in the unit\u2019s articles argument and your analysis of them.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014All evidence must be fully documented in-text and in the Works Cited page. You may use APA or MLA style as long as you are consistent. <\/span><\/p>\n

Form a fully developed response to the main question (given above) that includes a claim (\u201cThe transracial ideal embodied by Derek Jeter is\/is not attainable\u2026\u201d), reasons (\u201cbecause\u2026\u201d), and evidence (\u201cas shown by\u2026\u201d). This response is your main thesis and should appear prominently in your opening paragraph and be the central focus of the entire paper.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014When using your evidence (listed above), assume that your audience is unfamiliar with the text, video, etc. First, carefully summarize the evidence. You do not have to explain what baseball is, etc.), but you should directly cite important ideas from the text and make clear <\/span><\/p>\n

How does the author build her argument: anecdotes? persuasive language? numerical data? observation? Does the author\u2019s specific evidence and examples support her claims? Analyze critically to determine if their argument holds up, which will help you shape your own argument. You are not proving or disproving the author\u2019s argument <\/span><\/p>\n

but rather weighing its evidence to assess where the argument is strongest and best defended by the evidence at hand, including where it is perhaps outdated, missing <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014As part of your evidence, you must use at least TWO articles from the unit (in addition to Newman) and your sports commentary observation. You may use more <\/span><\/p>\n

than two articles from the unit, but please limit yourself to one sports commentary observation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014Your paper should include an introductory paragraph (stating the main thesis), a body of multiple paragraphs (arguing the validity of your main thesis in detail by making <\/span><\/p>\n
