For this assignment, you will compare the
\nsocial characteristics of two groups of the same age in two different time
\nperiods <\/span><\/span><\/span>in the
\nU.S. – namely, today’s younger generation and  <\/span><\/span><\/span>the
\nBaby <\/span>Boomers –  and
\nmake a hypothesis that explains why the different generations have different
\nbehavioral patterns by using your “<\/span>sociological imagination<\/span><\/span>.” The major goals of this assignment are to
\ndemonstrate your critical thinking and understanding of the concept of
\n“sociological imagination” defined by C. Wright Mills. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

1.  <\/span><\/span><\/span>choose <\/span>ONE <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>of the following statements<\/span> <\/span><\/i>that you
\nidentify as true, and the two groups were most significantly different.  <\/span><\/span><\/span>*For
\nthis assignment, the two different age groups are defined in the <\/span><\/span><\/span>following
\nways: “Today’s younger generation” includes those who were born in
\nthe late 1990s or early 2000s. <\/span><\/span><\/span>“The
\nBaby <\/span>Boomers” are those who
\nwere born from the mid-1940s to the mid-50s: thus, they were adolescents from
\nthe mid-1960s to the mid-70s. (If you don’t know anyone in this age group,
\ncompare your generation and your parent’s generation.) <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022     <\/span><\/span><\/span>Today’s younger generation change their
\njobs more frequently than the Baby<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span>Boomers<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>did when they were adolescent.<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\nare (physically and\/or psychologically) closer to their parents than the Baby<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>Boomers <\/span>when
\nthey were adolescents.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022     <\/span><\/span><\/span>They
\nare less likely to attend religious services and activities than <\/span><\/p>\n

the Baby<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>Boomers <\/span>when
\nthey were adolescents.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2. Write your essay <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>in two paragraphs<\/span><\/span><\/u><\/strong> <\/span><\/span>and at least 500 words total in the
\nfollowing order. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Your
\ninitial comment will be graded <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>out of 5 points<\/span><\/u><\/strong>. 1 point
\nwill be deducted from your original score if you did not conduct a spell check
\nbefore submitting your work or follow the instructed writing
\nformat.  <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In your first paragraph<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Identify the social aspect that you chose and briefly
\ndiscuss <\/span>how<\/span><\/i><\/b> the aspect shared among today’s younger generation is
\ndifferent from that of the Baby Boomers along with some
\nspecific examples<\/u>. Interview<\/span><\/u><\/strong> some
\nof your family members and friends who belong to those different generations to
\nenhance your argument in this section. (For instance, present how many times
\nyour interviewees had switched their jobs by the age of 22 if you chose the
\nfirst option.) (1 point)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In your second paragraph<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Define “sociological imagination” according to the
\nreading assignment.  Then, present one hypothesis<\/span><\/u><\/strong> that explains <\/span>why<\/span><\/b><\/em> you
\nthink the aspect is different among the two different generations by using your<\/span> sociological
\nimagination<\/span><\/i>. Your discussion should include some specific examples that
\nillustrate your argument.  (4 points: 1 point for the definition and 3
\npoints for discussion and examples) <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The major goal of this assignment is to demonstrate your
\nunderstanding of “sociological” perspectives. In your second
\nparagraph, make sure to discuss changes and differences in social surroundings
\nbetween the two generations in one of the following social institutions. <\/span><\/p>\n

–  technology (such as cell phone, the Internet,
\nsocial media, home electronics, etc.)<\/span><\/p>\n

– education system and requirements<\/span><\/p>\n

– economy (e.g. price of necessities, college tuition,
\ncost of raising children) <\/span><\/p>\n

–  science (e.g. development of child psychology and
\nAmerican Academy of Pediatricians’ recommendation)<\/span><\/p>\n

– work environment and job opportunities<\/span><\/p>\n

– family laws and regulations<\/span><\/p>\n

– laws regarding business hours on Sundays and religious
\nholidays<\/span><\/p>\n

– feminist movement and improvement of women’s rights<\/span><\/p>\n

– civil rights movement and anti-war movement<\/span><\/p>\n

– growing crime rates involving children and teenagers<\/span><\/p>\n

– the ways in which the media (TV, movies, social media,
\nand magazines) portrays “ideal family” and “ideal parents”<\/span><\/p>\n

– the ways in which the media portrays materialism<\/span><\/p>\n
