People can exhibit symptoms that fit more than one disorder. Mental illness is diagnosed by confirming the presence or absence of symptoms, which can be positive or negative compared to normal behavior. Mental disorders may be due to genetic factors, injuries, or brain diseases. Psychosocial factors such as psychological, family, and social conditions can also contribute to psychopathology.
