Format and Length Requirements:
\nmemo (Google \u201cmemo format\u201d and refer to the student example found in Unit
\n1), 2-4 pages<\/strong> (one page means one full<\/i> page).<\/span><\/p>\n

As indicated in the syllabus and
\nclassroom discussion, this course is almost evenly divided between academic and
\nbusiness writing.  And, since some of you may be new to your discipline,
\nthis assignment is designed to allow you to familiarize yourself with the
\nrequirements and conventions of working within your scholarly discourse
\ncommunities\u2212the readers and writers who share assumptions about what channels,
\nformats, and styles to use, what topics to discuss and how to discuss them, and
\nwhat constitutes evidence. In other words, this assignment allows you to learn
\nmore about one aspect of your professional academic community map.  <\/span><\/p>\n

In another sense, this assignment
\nrequires that you implement what you’ve been learning. You\u2019ll need to
\nadapt your message to an audience (in this case, your instructor) as well as
\napply the principles of you-attitude, positive emphasis, and reader benefits as
\nyou make decisions about how to organize your information in paragraphs and
\nabout what information (or details\/evidence) to include to support your
\npoints. <\/span><\/p>\n

You’ll complete a rhetorical
\nanalysis of sorts to accomplish these tasks. Essentially, you will analyze the
\nwritten discourse of the audience you’re joining by earning a degree
\n(professionals within your field).  <\/span><\/p>\n

Your assignment is to identify a
\nleading scholarly journal in your field and read TWO scholarly articles (two
\narticles from the same journal or two articles from two different but relatable
\njournals). The articles should be at least five pages long and cannot be book
\nreviews. The articles should include research. (You’ll find some suggestions
\nabout appropriate scholarly journals at the end of the page.) Please look at
\nthe articles and look at style, level of formality, types of evidence (kinds of
\ninformation) presented as support for arguments, and level of technicality of
\nevidence and presentation. Essentially, you’re looking for commonalities among
\nthese articles that reveal how your discipline communicates (as the articles
\nrepresent the formal discourse of your discipline). <\/span><\/p>\n

Please include at the end of your
\nmemo the name of the publication, the titles of the two articles you’ve chosen,
\nthe authors, the dates the articles were published, and the page numbers.
\nFollow APA formatting guidelines for references if you are not an English or
\nhistory major. Follow MLA formatting guidelines for Works Cited if an English
\nor history major. Remember: article titles are in quotations; journal titles
\nare in italics. Google \u201cPurdue Owl\u201d for information on formatting.<\/span><\/p>\n

And so, in a memo to me, describe
\nthe preferences of the discourse community represented by the journal you
\nchose. Divide your memo into categories that discuss the following. <\/span><\/p>\n

If you already have an idea about
\nwhat you want to do for your research paper for this class, choose articles you
\ncan use in your research paper.  If you don’t know what you want to write
\nyour research paper on, use this opportunity to see what’s currently being
\npublished in your field. <\/span><\/p>\n

To ensure that your articles come
\nfrom scholarly journals, please acquire your articles from the UHV
\nLibrary\u2019s database: https:\/\/library.uhv.edu\/az.php<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Your memo should have an
\nintroduction. The introduction should identify the purpose of the memo and its
\naudience. It should also specify your discipline and the journal. Your memo
\nshould also have a conclusion. In this conclusion, tell me what you’ve learned
\nabout your scholarly discourse community and its communication. <\/span><\/p>\n

You should avoid lengthy verbatim
\nquotations or paraphrases from the original articles. Most of your paper should
\nconsist of your own discussion based on your analysis of the articles. 
\nYou should bring in examples from the text as you need to prove your points\u2212try
\nto summarize these (but do not merely summarize these articles for the entire
\ndocument. Summarization should be minimal.  Most of the work needs to
\nfocus on the technical underpinnings of the articles). Be specific when you bring
\nin support, and indicate which articles prove your point and how they do
\nso. <\/span><\/p>\n

You should refrain from answering
\nthe questions listed above in the order they appear. You may only need to
\nanswer some of the questions, and there may be questions that you develop as
\nyou read the articles. Your discussion should be thoughtfully organized within
\nthe three main sections outlined above.  <\/span><\/p>\n

If the journal has a website,
\ncheck it out.  Look for the submission requirements and other requirements
\nthat the journal has. This may give you insight into the expectations of the
\njournal and its intended audience. <\/span><\/p>\n

Pay Attention: The Unit 2
\nassignment is designed to analyze the details and mechanics of scholarly
\narticles (not random web publications and your friend\u2019s blog). With that said,
\nmake sure that your analysis centers on these two areas: details and mechanics.
\nSometimes, students merely summarize the articles, focusing solely on the
\ncontent, not the mechanics. Don\u2019t do this! You are analyzing the mechanics of
\neach article based on the information we\u2019ve learned in this unit: sentence
\nstructure, author background info, formatting, length, jargon, diction, and so
\nforth. This is not a research paper or literature review. You are analyzing the
\ndiscourse community of each article, not necessarily what the article is saying
\nor upholding.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pick two different articles,
\neither two articles from one academic journal or two articles from two academic
\nJOURNALS. These journals must be in or close to your degree\u2019s field. Once you
\nhave your articles, dig into the details and mechanics of both articles.
\nRemember that article titles are in quotation marks while journal titles are in
\nitalics. This rule applies in both APA and MLA formatting.  <\/span><\/p>\n

After you finish writing your
\ncomposition, read it aloud and self-review your document. Then use the free
\nonline grammar checkers to spot other possible issues. Remember, these checkers
\nare helpful but are not always accurate or correct. Use them cautiously and
\nscrutinize their findings. Next, polish your work and submit it to the
\ndiscussion board as a PDF for peer review.<\/span><\/p>\n
