 What are teacher\u2019s perceptions of using
\nobservations to improve teaching and learning?<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Description of the assessment<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h1>\n

Assessment will be
\nproduction of a dissertation (15000 words +\/- 10%)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Module Learning Outcomes<\/span><\/h1>\n

\u00b7 Outline and critically evaluate the feasibility of a small-scale
\neducational study in an area of relevance to the student and the education
\nprofession. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7 Compile a critical review of pertinent academic literature in
\norder to situate the educational study, drawing upon a range of sources from
\ntheory, policy and practice. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7 Design, implement and evaluate an appropriate and ethical
\nmethodology for the small-scale study, drawing upon pertinent academic
\nliterature to inform the appropriateness. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7 Collect, record, analyse and interpret data appropriate to the
\neducational study in order to highlight the outcomes of the investigation in
\nrelation to existing knowledge. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7 Apply effective communication and presentation skills in line
\nwith those expected of a Master of Arts in Education.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Assessment Content<\/span><\/h1>\n

Summative Assessments are the pieces of
\ncoursework that you complete which contribute towards your final grade in this
\nmodule.  <\/span>All Assessment will be both
\nformative and summative with the opportunity throughout for you to assess
\nyourself and make sense of new learning. You should take the feedback that you
\nreceive from your supervisor and use it to help you improve your performance. Details
\nof the summative assessment are shown below. <\/span><\/p>\n

You
\nmust submit your final dissertation via the Turnitin submission point by the
\nstated deadline.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Part 1:<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Proposal Structure<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

It is important to stress that the Research
\nProposal is an important statement of intention that will be considered by the
\nexaminers to assess your success in implementing it. It also represents an
\nagreement between the supervisor and yourself as to the viability of the
\nproposed project and the criteria by which it will be judged. It is suggested
\nthat you adopt the following format in presenting your dissertation. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Title or topic area of proposed
\nstudy:<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Your working title should reflect the
\ncontent of your proposal. The title should be focused and summative.<\/span><\/p>\n

What
\nis the aim and objectives of your study?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

This section should contain your reasons
\nfor the particular focus of the study and the background literature to which
\nthe project relates. <\/span><\/p>\n

This is the important part of the proposal.
\nIt should tell the reader why you feel the research that you are planning is
\nworth the effort. This may be expressed in the form of a problem that needs
\nsolving or something that you find exciting and has aroused your curiosity. The
\nreader will be looking for evidence here that there is sufficient interest from
\nyou to sustain you over the long months ahead. This is also the section where
\nyou will demonstrate your knowledge of the relevant literature. Moreover, it
\nwill clarify where your proposal fits into the debate in the literature. You
\nwill be expected to show a clear link between the previous work that has been
\ndone in your field of research interest and the content of your proposal.
\n(Saunders, Lewis and Thornhill, 2003, p.30)<\/span><\/p>\n

Aims and objectives need to be focused,
\nmanageable, observable. See the section on how to write aims and objectives and
\ngrading criteria (3.1). You are encouraged to consider only one aim. Discuss
\nwith your supervisor if you are not clear about the number of aims and
\nobjectives.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Brief review of relevant
\nliterature and rationale for study<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

This need only provide references of
\napproximately 6 key publications. It is not necessary to attach copies of the
\npublications. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Outline of study design and methods<\/span><\/b> (Research Strategy
\nand Methodology)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It will detail precisely how you intend to
\ngo about achieving your research objectives. It will also justify your choice
\nof method in the light of those objectives. These two aims may be met by
\ndividing your method section into two parts: research design and data
\ncollection. In the part on research design, you will explain where you intend
\nto carry out the research. You will also need to explain the identity of your
\nresearch population. This section should also include an explanation of the
\ngeneral way in which you intend to carry out the research. Will it be based on
\na survey, interviews, examination of secondary data or a combination of
\nmethods? Here again it is essential to explain why you have chosen your approach.
\nYour explanation should be based on the most effective way of meeting your
\nresearch objectives. The research design section gives an overall view of the
\nmethod chosen and the reason for that choice. (Saunders, Lewis and Thornhill,
\n2003, p.30)<\/span><\/p>\n

Part 2<\/span><\/p>\n

Dissertation
\nStructure:<\/span><\/u><\/b><\/p>\n

It is suggested that you adopt the
\nfollowing format in presenting your dissertation:<\/span><\/p>\n

Title
\nPage:<\/span><\/b> It should contain details of the title,
\nstudent name, programme and year of submission.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abstract:<\/span><\/b> It should provide a brief summary of the dissertation. It should
\nstate the nature and purpose of the dissertation and outline the approach
\nadopted.<\/span><\/p>\n

Acknowledgements:<\/span><\/b> Acknowledgements of outside help (NB not tutorial support)<\/span><\/p>\n

Table
\nof Contents:<\/span><\/b> It should list the sequence with page
\nnumbers of all relevant subdivisions of the dissertation; i.e. chapter headings
\nsection and sub-section (if appropriate).<\/span><\/p>\n

List
\nof Tables<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

List
\nof Figures\/Illustrations<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Introduction
\n(or Chapter 1):<\/span><\/b> It should provide a clear statement
\nof the aim of the dissertation and how it relates to existing work and an
\noutline of its main findings.<\/span><\/p>\n
