In the Learning Activity titled \u201cWhat\u2019s At the Center,\u201d you explored policy (law) as prevailing values, assumptions, and Ideas, thoughts about policy, law (structural frameworks in society) as representing prevailing values. It is a good practice in general, and often required for due deliberation that a leader analyze policy and law in order to locate the value. The thought is that all policies and laws are in place to support an idea of good, or a value (think of policy\/law as a compulsion toward a perception of good, or best).<\/p>\n

Prepare and submit a 4 \u2013 5 page paper that identifies the values being encouraged or reinforced in 1. a code of ethic, 2. a law (any level of government), and 3. an organizational policy.<\/p>\n

A well-constructed paper will adhere to APA standards, and cite at least three sources from this competency.  <\/p>\n

Code of Ethic<\/strong><\/p>\n

Locate a code of ethic. This can be the code of ethic of an organization, a profession, or some other institution.  Codes of ethic will espouse multiple values. Identify 2-3 of them for this paper.<\/p>\n

Law\/Public Policy<\/strong><\/p>\n

Remember that one way to think of law is as the policy for the public. Locate a law at the local\/municipal\/cite, county\/regional, state, or federal level. Identify the value behind the law.   <\/p>\n

Organizational Policy<\/strong><\/p>\n

Locate an organization’s policy and procedure manual. Review perhaps the less known sections of the policy and procedure manual to find 2-3 policies.  Identify the value behind the policies.<\/p>\n

The Paper Structure<\/strong><\/p>\n

Introduce your paper (avoid deep indications or analysis in the introduction). Identify, with direct quotation and proper citation, the sections of your selected code of ethic, law and organizational policy.  Each of the three should be given space in the paper. In other words, don\u2019t place all three in the same paragraph.<\/p>\n

Analysis<\/strong><\/p>\n

Using what you\u2019ve explored in the competency so far, indicate for each (code of ethic, law, and organizational policy) what value(s) is\/are contained in the them.  What value is being represented, encouraged, reinforced? An example that cannot be used for this paper is: All laws against murder (the unlawful taking of life with malice) are explicit statements in support of the idea\/value that life has meaning and intrinsic worth. Identify the value for all three components (code of ethic, law, and organizational policy).<\/p>\n

Reflective Analysis<\/strong><\/p>\n

Identify three (3) insights gained into policy or law as prevailing expressions of values.  What surprised you or what was your most interesting discovery? What can you do with this understanding in the next year that will help make you a better leader?<\/p>\n

Be sure to Include a title page, introduction, summary, and references, APA format, 3 scholarly references that are within 7 years old.<\/p>\n
