People sometimes want to say that morality is “relative” — usually meaning it is relative to a given culture. The old saying “when in Rome, do as the Romans” expresses this idea. This approach is usually called “Cultural Ethical Relativism”, or just “Cultural Relativism” for short. Moral relativists usually say this is a good thing, because we shouldn’t go around judging others — who are we to say what is right or wrong for ancient Romans anyway? This would mean there is no <\/span><\/span>REAL<\/span> <\/span>difference between morality and custom. Many other people think <\/span>morality<\/span> <\/span>must be different from mere custom. In fact, they think a culture may have customs that are morally wrong, such as genital mutilation, for example. The idea that some moral truths or moral facts exist is called “Moral Realism”.<\/span>
