Why I Am Asking You to Complete This Writing Task –<\/strong> <\/span> <\/p>\n

General Directions – <\/strong>For this writing task please <\/span>read<\/em> Geneva Smitherman’s “Black Language and the Education of Black Children: One Mo Once” before turning your attention to the questions that follow:<\/p>\n

  1. What is Smitherman <\/span>responding<\/em> <\/span>to in this article? That is, what does Smitherman seem to be adding to the conversation? Can you name the conversastion she is engaging?<\/li>\n
  2. In the time Smitherman writes, Black language was called “Ebonics.” Most scholars of Black language no longer use “Ebonics” but it was popular in the 1970s and 1980s. What ideas were new to you as you read Smitherman’s work? Who are her communities? Who are her “enemies” in this piece? How does she show love for her community?<\/li>\n
  3. What is most challenging about this idea of Black language\/Ebonics as Smitherman writes about it to you?\n
