color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>You<br \/>\nwill be sent to a page to enter some basic information about your home, such as<br \/>\nthe date that it was built, the amount of livable square footage, and the types<br \/>\nof energy used.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>After filling out the<br \/>\nappropriate slots on that page, click Save Answers.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>This will take you to another page that has<br \/>\nlinks to various aspects about a home, such as water heater, lighting,<br \/>\netc.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>The calculator will also assign you<br \/>\na Session ID number, which you should write down on the activity sheet (the<br \/>\nnumber is found next to the Calculate button).<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>Clicking on each on of these factor links will allow you to personalize<br \/>\nthe information about your home, such as what type of air conditioner you have<br \/>\nand what are your temperature settings.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>After you have visited a link, the page will place a blue dot by that<br \/>\nlink to tell you that you have already filled in that information.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Now that<br \/>\nwe have the approximate electrical energy usage per year, we are prepared to<br \/>\ninvestigate the economics of using solar or wind energy in your present<br \/>\nlocation.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Let us start with solar<br \/>\nenergy.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Use the annual solar radiation<br \/>\nmap from the National Renewable Energy Labs (<\/span><a style=\"cursor: auto;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">https:\/\/www.nrel.gov\/gis\/assets\/images\/solar-annual-ghi-2018-usa-scale-01.jpg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">) to find out the average amount of<br \/>\nsolar energy that strikes a 1-m<sup style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">2<\/sup> solar panel at your current<br \/>\nlocation.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Enter this value on the<br \/>\nactivity sheet and then multiply it by 365 days in order to calculate Average Annual<br \/>\nSolar Energy (AASE) that is striking the surface in a year.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Since most standard solar panels are only<br \/>\nabout 12% efficient, this number needs to be divided by 8 in order to calculate<br \/>\nthe Average Annual Solar Panel Output (AASPO) a 1-m<sup style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">2<\/sup> solar panel per<br \/>\nyear in your area.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>If this number is<br \/>\nthen divided into the total amount of electrical energy needed for you home,<br \/>\nyou will have estimated the area of solar panels that you need to meet your<br \/>\nelectrical needs for the year.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Using<br \/>\ncurrent price estimates (they vary quite a bit, but $800\/sq meter is a good average)<br \/>\nfor solar panels then allows you to calculate the price of putting in solar<br \/>\npanels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">After<br \/>\nfinishing filling in this data, answer the questions on the activity<br \/>\nsheet.<span style=\"cursor: auto;
