For the final paper, you will choose a research topic of interest to you and propose a well-supported study design. Using materials from class and additional external research, you identify supporting literature for this question, a thoughtful study design, and reasonable predictions. To ensure this assignment is manageable and you have the chance to get revise and update your project, the final paper will be <\/span><\/span>sequenced.<\/span><\/p>\n

Goals for this Assignment<\/span><\/p>\n

1. <\/span><\/span>To give you an opportunity to read more about a topic in psychology that interests you.<\/span><\/div>\n
2. <\/span><\/span>To gain experience collating, synthesizing, and integrating empirically based research<\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n
3. <\/span><\/span>To try developing your own empirical study design. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
4. <\/span><\/span>To practice articulating your point-of-view using scientific evidence<\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n

Final Paper Sequence<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 <\/span><\/span>Who is the Audience?<\/span> <\/span><\/span>A smart, but uninformed researcher \u2013 maybe not a field expert, you should address your audience as though they are familiar with the core principles of empirical, academic research and the basics tenets of psychology. Further, assume that your audience doesn\u2019t know about the specific topic about which you are writing. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u2022 <\/span><\/span>What is your Role as the Writer?<\/span> <\/span><\/span>To describe <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>key terms <\/span><\/span>relevant<\/span> <\/span>to <\/span><\/span>your<\/span> <\/span>research <\/span><\/span>area<\/span>, <\/span><\/span>to clearly <\/span><\/span>define <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>key issues, questions, or debates (aka \u201csetting up the question\u201d), and to <\/span><\/span>ultimately <\/span><\/span>provide <\/span><\/span>a <\/span><\/span>concrete <\/span><\/span>test <\/span><\/span>for the questions you raise<\/span> <\/span>in the form of a thoughtful empirical study<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>Your goal is <\/span><\/span>also for<\/span> <\/span>readers to walk away with some new insight into a particular research topic. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
