Briefing papers and final paper: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

At the beginning of the semester you will choose a topic from a list provided by the instructor.  You will write three briefing papers worth 8% each and a final p<\/span>aper <\/span><\/span>worth 14<\/span>%<\/span>, all on the same topic. Detailed guidance for each <\/span><\/span>briefing paper<\/span> <\/span>will be posted on blackboard and will include the<\/span> <\/span>minimum <\/span><\/span>number <\/span><\/span>of sources for each paper<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Step1: Paper # 1 <\/span><\/span>will describe a major issue in international policy or globalization, the extent of the issue (i.e. whether it affects the whole world or just a specific region or group of countries) and discuss why a global response is or is not desirable. Students will choose the topic guided by the instructor. <\/span><\/span>(Minimum 1000 words, minimum sources 6) (8pts)<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Step 2: Paper # 2 will describe a) 6 of the <\/span><\/span>main international Intergovernmental Organizations and Non-Governmental Organizations t<\/span>hat are concerned with the topic<\/span> <\/span>and how the<\/span>y are dealing with it generally; and b) <\/span><\/span>the international laws and norms related to the issue.<\/span> <\/span>(Minimum 1000 words,<\/span> <\/span><\/span>minimum sources 6)  (8pts)<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Step 3: Paper # 3 will explain in more detail the extent of the problem in at <\/span><\/span>least <\/span><\/span>2<\/span>countries\/regions<\/span>, and explain what activities at least 4 of the IGOS\/NGOs featured in paper # 2 are carrying out in those countries\/regions  (Minimum 1000 words,<\/span> <\/span><\/span>minimum sources 6) (8pts)<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Step 4: Final paper:   You will provide a general summary of what you consider to be the most important issues around your topic.  The main content of the paper will discuss the effectiveness of international governance in dealing with the issue and discuss the institutional capacities needed to deal with the issue in the future. You can draw on the content of the 3 briefing papers where appropriate. (Minimum 1500 words,<\/span> <\/span><\/span>minimum sources 12) (12 points)<\/span><\/p>\n
