Family Planning, Abortion Issues: Option B<\/strong>

       Abortion is a highly sensitive and controversial issue. Opinions and ethical responses are diverse. In the scenario, a married couple are disagreeing over an abortion of unknown staging.<\/p>\n

       A woman\u2019s desire to have an abortion can be echoed in natural law theory, especially if her life is threatened by pregnancy. Natural law would suggest on a basic level that we have a right to not be subject to harm (MacKinnon & Fiala, 2017). Even those who traditionally feel that abortion is morally questionable, such as individuals with a religious leaning, may agree that abortion is acceptable as a byproduct of saving a woman\u2019s life, such as removing a cancerous uterus. \u201cA pregnant woman who is faced with the grim reality of impending death\u2026may use these\u2026procedures for the reasonably grave reason of saving her life\u201d (Irving, 2000, p. 51). From the man\u2019s perspective, the husband could morally argue against the abortion using rule utilitarianism (MacKinnon & Fiala, 2017). If every woman had an abortion, society would cease to exist because babies would no longer be born. Therefore, from a moral stance, abortion is not tolerable because it would not be allowed all the time.<\/p>\n

       If the roles were reversed, the husband could cite action utilitarianism as a reason for abortion (MacKinnon & Fiala, 2017). The family\u2019s circumstances are unknown, but if the family were poor and they already had other children to support and give attention to, adding another baby to the family would put a strain on resources. If the husband thought the foreseeable units of happiness experienced by the family would be decreased if the pregnancy continued, abortion would be indicated under this utilitarian thinking. The woman, if wanting to continue the pregnancy, could counter with the moral principle of autonomy, and the right to make decisions for her body. \u201cIt is this aspect of our nature that gives us our dignity as persons\u201d (MacKinnon & Fiala, 2017, p. 125). Many women\u2019s rights groups also support that bodily autonomy takes priority over any collaborative decision, even when it is contradictory to cultural perspectives. \u201cCollective decision-making is common across cultures, societies, and governments. But group decisions cannot circumscribe the rights of individuals\u201d (United Nations Population Fund, 2021, para. 10).<\/p>\n

       The abortion topic is not something I\u2019ve encountered within my nursing roles, but it is important for nurses to be educated on this delicate issue. The discussion also highlights the need to be unbiased and set our personal opinions aside, as well as not make assumptions. Being male or female is not a predisposition to being either in favor or against termination. My questions this week would be whether you think an unborn child should be given protection under natural law theory from an ethical viewpoint, and if so, at what stage and why? Do you feel that a man and woman\u2019s ethical choice on abortion takes equal standing?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

According to ethics, confidentiality is important <\/span><\/span>when<\/span><\/span>approaching the matter. The people in the town are a patriarchal society, and engaging some of the members in family planning discussions should be private. The family planning discussion is a sensitive topic<\/span><\/span> when addressing the families in the community. However,<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>to<\/span><\/span> gain <\/span><\/span>their trust,<\/span><\/span> I must <\/span><\/span>ensure the confidentiality of the conversation. <\/span><\/span>I am required to give full information concerning family planning to the families, whether positive or negative<\/span><\/span> (<\/span><\/span>MacKinnon<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>& Fiala<\/span><\/span>, 2014).<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Cultural sensitivity is another ethical issue to consider during interaction<\/span><\/span> (<\/span><\/span>N<\/span><\/span>yc.gov<\/span><\/span>, n.d)<\/span><\/span>. I am to first get a better understanding of the cultural norms of the society by engaging them in a discussion. Typically, this will show that I have respect for their traditional methods before addressing my concerns. <\/span><\/span>Informed consent is an ethical issue arising in discussion. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

How to Approach the Family<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

My first step is to acknowledge the <\/span><\/span>community members that I respect their practices by familiarizing with their culture. Moreover, this will help in building and gaining their trust. Listening to their stories, experiences, and knowledge of family planning will help them understand where they are coming from. My second approach will be the <\/span><\/span>use of<\/span><\/span> data and evidence to show them the health risks associated with conducting abortions and <\/span><\/span>constant pregnancies<\/span><\/span> (A<\/span><\/span>hrq.gov<\/span><\/span>, 2019)<\/span><\/span>. Advocating for the importance of family planning by explaining its benefits, like reduced infant and mother mortality. After giving out the help of family planning, I will address people’s misconceptions about it by providing clear information. I will empower the women and encourage them to make decisions for themselves to ensure good health. <\/span><\/span>Lastly, I will approach the village elders to help in advocating for <\/span><\/span>family planning. Typically, their involvement will promote acceptance among the community members. I will do a follow-up to continue offering education concerning family planning by providing them with different options and addressing arising concerns. <\/span><\/span>What are the ways that local leaders can use to support and advocate for family planning<\/span><\/span>? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
