Introduction  <\/span><\/h3>\n

For this project you will create a design statement, script breakdown and series of image boards which articulate a hypothetical design for the script listed below. Your project will demonstrate what you have learned through the lectures and tutorials about the choices Production Designers make in creating a film\u2019s design and how these choices can make the film richer, engaging and more meaningful.<\/p>\n

I selected Ex-Machina Script. Read it in its entirety at least once.<\/span>

<\/span><\/p>\n

1. DESIGN STATEMENT<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/strong>NOTE:<\/span> <\/span>This relates to the entire script. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Articulate your overall design concept<\/strong> <\/span>for the whole film clearly and concisely in a 1000-word statement to include:<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Detailed design description for all of your key design choices (Mood, <\/span><\/span>Colour, <\/span><\/span>Location, <\/span><\/span>Set Dressing, <\/span><\/span>Props)<\/span>
\u00b7 Written rationale providing deep <\/span>analysis<\/span> <\/span><\/span>as to why these decisions have been made.<\/p>\n

2. SCRIPT BREAKDOWN<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/span> <\/span>This relates to selected scenes only – see below.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Prepare a clear and thorough art department script breakdown on the template provided, for the selected scenes only, to include all scripted and implied items relating to the art department under each relevant column heading.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. IMAGE BOARDS<\/span>
<\/strong><\/span>NOTE:<\/span> <\/span>This relates to selected scenes only – see below.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Compose 1 x A4 image board for EACH heading below, for each of your script\u2019s selected scenes <\/span><\/strong>(ie. 10 boards in total<\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n

  • Image boards must be clear, refined, detailed <\/span>and <\/span>named<\/strong>. 
    <\/span><\/li>\n
  • These should strongly <\/span><\/span>resonate with the story and<\/span> <\/span>characters while <\/span>communicating your own unique take on the design. <\/span><\/li>\n
  • All images must be correctly cited and listed at the end of the PDF file submission, refer to <\/span>Assessment Support <\/span><\/strong>below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Assessment Criteria<\/span><\/h3>\n

    The <\/span>Production Design Concept<\/strong> <\/span>will be assessed with the following criteria:<\/p>\n

    • Written <\/span>Design Description<\/strong> <\/span>and <\/span>Rationale<\/strong> <\/span>clearly describe<\/span> the design concept and successfully outlines all key aspects of design choices <\/span>with deep <\/span>analysis<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span>(approx. 1000 words<\/em>)<\/li>\n
    • Written <\/span>breakdown<\/strong> <\/span>of the selected script scenes (using template provided) is <\/span>thorough and detailed, including scripted and <\/span>implied items <\/span><\/span><\/span>required for the design.<\/span>
      <\/em><\/span><\/li>\n
    • The <\/span><\/span>mood <\/span><\/strong>of the design is communicated effectively with<\/span> <\/span>appropriate imagery.  (2 x A4 page of cited images).<\/span><\/li>\n
    • The <\/span><\/span>colour <\/span><\/strong><\/span>palette\/scheme is communicated effectively with a focus on tonality, texture and contrast. (2 x A4 page of cited images)<\/span><\/li>\n
    • The <\/span>locations<\/strong> <\/span>for the design are clearly communicated using suitable imagery <\/span><\/span>that clearly illustrate the qualities of <\/span><\/span>the space\/s. <\/span><\/span>This <\/span>MUST<\/span> <\/span><\/span>include one exterior image followed by images of the interiors.<\/span> <\/span>(2 x A4 page of cited images).<\/span><\/li>\n
    • The <\/span>set dressings – scripted and implied<\/span><\/strong> <\/span><\/span>for the design are clearly communicated by suitable reference <\/span><\/span>images.<\/span> <\/span>(2 x A4 page of cited images)<\/span><\/li>\n
    • The <\/span>props<\/strong> <\/span>for the design are clearly communicated using appropriate imagery. <\/span>You must provide images for all props in the scene<\/span><\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>(2 x A4 page of cited images)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      *Written word total to be approx. 1400 words. <\/span>Images hold weight like words<\/span> <\/span>– so be thorough with your visual research (1400 word equivalent). <\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

      • What opportunities does this film offer a designer?<\/li>\n
      • What challenges does it pose?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
