These case studies will be chosen from historical examples, comprising 19th-20th century examples that include both original works and institutions as well as later works influenced by them. The goal of this project is to address the ways in which cultural and historical contexts affect the development of ideas, cultural practices, and institutions.

This paper is about an examination of design/architecture exhibiting specific characteristics that respond to particular theoretical and practical concerns of the time. For example, one might write about how 19th-20th century British and American architects responded to John Ruskin’s ideas formulated in “Seven Lamps of Architecture” or how functionality became the focus of Bauhausian design. Alternatively, there are scores of architects and designers who addressed the question of organic design or engaged in solving a multitude of design problems in response to theoretical and practical concerns of their time.

Requirements:

1. Research area & learning outcomes:
• Analyze 19th and 20th century architecture and interiors in the social and political context of the time, illustrating how it impacted the evolution of the styles
• Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the subject chosen with accurate and effective evaluation clearly communicating the information, accompanied by proper citations

2. Thesis statement:
• Defines how you will interpret the art, architectural, and design issues under discussion
• Tells the reader what to expect from the rest of your project

Note: A thesis statement is usually a single sentence in the introduction of your paper that presents your argument to the reader. The body of the paper presents organized evidence, such as literature review and case studies, to persuade the reader of the logic of your argument. The conclusion should synthesize your thoughts and demonstrate the importance of your ideas.

3. Literature review:
• Provides an overview and discusses published research in your area of interest (combines both summary and synthesis).
• Includes citations of your sources (books, magazines. articles, interviews, case studies, photos of existing projects, etc.) You must use at least four or better seven sources, and at least two of them must be print book sources. Your literature review statement should be no longer than one page.

4. Case Studies and/or Examples:
• Based on literature review findings, identify and review a minimum of three different case studies addressing the same issue in the chosen project (e.g., neoclassical principles of planning, Gothic revival in interiors, technological innovations, farm housing, organic design, light solutions, materials of design, suburban development) and the same building/interior/ furnishing type
• Analyze the examples and discuss how the following matters were addressed: stylistic elements, overall plan (if architecture), interior/exterior elements/environments, users’ behavior, space, form and function, style and ideas
• Your three examples should be arranged chronologically and come from 19th, early 20th ct, and later 20th ct.

The research paper involves research, critical analysis, and description of a specific architectural project (building), interior design, furnishings, or art works designed for a specific interior and included in this course, using primary sources of investigation.
