     <\/span><\/span>may choose one of the more traditional ethnic groups in the United States such as <\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/span><\/span>African Americans, Hispanic-Americans, Asian-Americans, Native-Americans, or <\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/span><\/span>Anglo-Americans. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

– <\/span><\/span>In your analysis, discuss the group\u2019s experience as well as the social, historical and<\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n

     <\/span><\/span>political forces that shaped the group\u2019s cultural orientation and its particular mode of <\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/span><\/span>adaption, i.e. integration, separation, marginalization or assimilation. You may also <\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/span><\/span>want to consider the various stages of cultural identity development as a basis of intra-<\/p>\n

     <\/span><\/span>group variations. <\/span><\/p>\n

– <\/span>The paper should be ten pages in length and conform to<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

    <\/span><\/span>APA guidelines.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

– <\/span>I require you to cite your sources and use references in the body of<\/span> <\/span><\/b><\/div>\n

    <\/span><\/span>the paper. You should also include a bibliography at the end. (use only <\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

    <\/span><\/span>journal articles).<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Suggested Outline for Paper<\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/b><\/p>\n

1)    <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b>Introduction<\/b><\/p>\n

            <\/span><\/span>Describe the demographic characteristics of the population i.e. How many people <\/span><\/p>\n

            <\/span><\/span>constitute the population, their various nationalities or subgroups, their primary <\/span><\/p>\n

            <\/span><\/span>locations, the various waves of immigration they have experienced etc. The <\/span><\/p>\n

            <\/span><\/span>historical and social experiences of the group.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

            <\/span><\/span>Cultural characteristics<\/b><\/p>\n

2)    <\/span><\/span><\/span>Discuss the cultural characteristics of the group. In so doing provide a definition <\/span><\/p>\n

      <\/span><\/span>of culture, describe the various dimensions and models of culture i.e. surface vs. <\/span><\/p>\n

      <\/span><\/span>deep dimensions (ontology, axiology, epistemology), worldview, tight vs. loose, <\/span>  <\/span><\/p>\n

      <\/span><\/span>male vs. female, collectivism vs. individualism, subculture vs. dominant culture, <\/span><\/p>\n

      <\/span><\/span>Kluckholm\u2019s model of culture etc.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

3)    <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b>Acculturation<\/b><\/p>\n

Describe the acculturation experiences of the group and in so doing, apply the model of acculturation presented in class. This includes talking about stages such as pre-contact, contact etc. Also describe the particular mode of acculturation such as assimilation, integration, marginalization etc. In addition, discuss the moderator variables that influence the acculturation process i.e. socio-economic status, cultural characteristics, experiences of discrimination etc.  <\/span><\/span>Finally describe some of the outcomes of acculturation. For instance, negative mental health outcomes etc.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

4)    <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b>The Influence of Minority Status<\/b><\/p>\n

      <\/span><\/span>      <\/span>Discuss the issue of majority-minority relations in relation to the group you are  <\/span><\/p>\n

            <\/span><\/span>writing about. Say in what ways that the group represents a minority or majority <\/span><\/p>\n

            <\/span><\/span>in terms of its status and how this shapes the group members experiences in the <\/span><\/p>\n

            <\/span><\/span>United States both socially and historically. In doing so describe how the issue of <\/span><\/p>\n

            <\/span><\/span>prejudice and discrimination relates to the group\u2019s experiences particularly as this <\/span><\/p>\n

            <\/span><\/span>pertains to the relationship it has with its own group members as well as with <\/span><\/p>\n

            <\/span><\/span>other groups in the society. You may also want to explain the causes of prejudice \\      <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

            <\/span><\/span>by incorporating the various theories that were presented in class. In addition <\/span><\/p>\n

        <\/span><\/span>    <\/span>describe the effects that such discrimination may have had on the psychological <\/span><\/p>\n

            <\/span><\/span>wellbeing on both majority and minority group members<\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

5)    <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b>Racial\/Ethnic Identity\/ gender identity\/sexual identity etc<\/b><\/p>\n

Describe the models of racial identity presented in class and in the readings. In doing so, describe how these models may be applied in describing how group members perceive themselves as racial beings. <\/span><\/p>\n
