\n<\/span>Students will prepare an 8-10 page paper concerning this organization
\nand submit it to be reviewed. The papers will be due Sunday, August 6. The papers
\nare to be written in 12 pt. type and double-spaced. APA format is required for
\ncitations and formatting; however, a title page and abstract are not necessary.
\nIf references are used, they must be properly cited, and a reference page must
\nbe included. <\/span>The papers should include a
\nbrief history of the organization, the players, problems, current programs,
\nfunding sources, and SWOT analysis. Students must include a summary of what
\nthey think the organization must do to improve its governance. <\/span>Questions that should be addressed include:
\n\u2022 How many members are there on the board? \u2022 What is the board composition?
\n[age, race, sex, occupation, etc.] \u2022 What is the board’s structure or how does
\nit operate? [Are committees used?] \u2022 How often does the board meet? \u2022 Who is in
\ncharge? \u2022 What policies has the board enacted? \u2022 Are the policies followed? \u2022
\nWhat is the relationship between the board (or the board chair) and the
\nExecutive <\/span>\u2022 Director or Chief Executive
\nOfficer? \u2022 What problems does the agency have or do you see? [Include a SWOT
\nanalysis of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the
\norganization.] \u2022 What is the mission? \u2022 What are the current programs? <\/span>4 \u2022 What are the funding sources? \u2022 Do you
\nsee any moral, legal, or ethical issues of concern? \u2022 What is your assessment
\nof how the board\/organization works and what do you see for its future? <\/span>These questions are to give you guidance as
\nto what to cover in the paper. <\/span>They are
\nnot in any particular order. Students may organize the paper any way they
\nwish. <\/span>Students are advised to choose a
\nnonprofit organization that they can visit to analyze and to attend more than
\none board meeting if possible. Due to the fact that some nonprofit boards meet
\nonly quarterly, students must select their organization by July 17 so that they
\nmay be able to attend at least one board meeting before the papers are
\ndue. <\/span>All papers are due August 6. <\/span>Advisory boards of any kind may not be used.
\nYou must analyze an organization with an actual governing board. While some
\ngovernment agencies do similar work to a nonprofit, they do not have a
\ngoverning board structure and may not be used. Make sure the board meetings are
\nat a place you can attend and not many miles away unless you are willing to
\nmake the time and financial commitment to really attend the board meetings. If
\nthe board will only meet one time before August 6 make sure that the board
