ANY TOPIC IS ALLOWED AS LONG AS IT FITS WITH THE BROADER THEMES OF INTERNATIONAL POLITICS. It is not requried to use all 5 documents into the OP-ed use the documents as you see fit <\/p>\n

The grading of op-eds is composed of three variables \u2013 quality of argument, connection to course material, and quality of writing.<\/p>\n


<\/p>\n

1) Quality of argument: 4 points.<\/p>\n


<\/p>\n

A good editorial is efficient and effective. It posits an argument (about, say, the cause of<\/p>\n


<\/p>\n

insecurity and crisis, or the incorrect views of policymakers and analysts, or the solutions<\/p>\n


<\/p>\n

to problems of the international system), and relies on evidence to support the view.<\/p>\n


<\/p>\n

More importantly a good editorial recommends the best option or policy response to the<\/p>\n


<\/p>\n

crisis. Op eds not only enlighten, but prescribe action. These are influence attempts \u2013<\/p>\n


<\/p>\n

not book reports.<\/p>\n


<\/p>\n

2) Connection to and evident knowledge of course material: 4 points.<\/p>\n


<\/p>\n

 <\/span>Policy recommendations do not have to be one of those we consider in the second part of the course; nor does your diagnosis need to draw directly from theories we considered in the first part. Yet I do expect you to bring in course readings\/materials\/ideas. I want to see how you use the material. YOU NEED TO USE COURSE READINGS IN THE CONTEXT OF YOUR OPED. And I do request that you cite these materials (which is not necessarily apart of a real op-ed).<\/p>\n

3) Quality of writing\u2014no wasted words, essay is in allotted word limit, etc. <\/span><\/p>\n
