During the semester, we covered several case studies, theories, and concepts to understand the wave of social movements that have shaken Latin American societies during the last decades. Even though the cases studied can only be understood in their own temporal and sociopolitical context, the data analyzed during the semester suggests a positive correlation between the implementation of neoliberal policies and the formation of social movements and other forms of collective action. Based on the material covered during the semester, answer the following questions: <\/span><\/p>\n

  1. What explains the formation of social movements and why they occur when they occur? To receive full credit, you must: <\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      • Base your response on the reading \u201cA Moment in the Struggle for Public Transportation in the City.\u201d (CHP 2)<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Explain how Brazil’s 2013 protests illustrate the definition of social movement. Make at least two connections. <\/span><\/li>\n
      • Explain how Political Process theory, in general, and the concept of political opportunity, helped you make sense of Brazil\u2019s 2013 mobilizations. To this end, make sure to go over the study notes.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Include at least two other concepts and\/or theories covered during the semester that strengthen your line of argument.  <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n
