member of the academic commu<\/span>nity, you should find where your voice, perspective, and<\/span>
argument fit into the existing conversation. So, unlike a research<\/span> <\/span>paper<\/span> <\/span>(a popular genre that<\/span>
s<\/span>ummarizes or explains ideas), this assignment asks you<\/span> <\/span>to interpret<\/span> <\/span>a wide spectrum of<\/span>
perspectives<\/span> <\/span>and<\/span> <\/span>then<\/span> <\/span>offer<\/span> <\/span>your<\/span> <\/span>own<\/span> <\/span>creative insights<\/span> <\/span>into the conflict<\/span> <\/span>and how to resolve it<\/span>.<\/span>
This assignment asks you to build on the source citation and argumentation skills you<\/span>‘ve<\/span>
developed<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>reengage<\/span> <\/span>in the critical examination of texts, perform the careful observati<\/span>on and<\/span>
development of voice you<\/span>‘ve<\/span> <\/span>rehearsed, and work within the broad and diverse conventions of<\/span>
scholarly research.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
Whatever you decide<\/span> <\/span>to write about<\/span>, you should investigate an issue that you are genuinely<\/span>
in<\/span>tere<\/span>sted in learning more about before you<\/span> <\/span>work to narrow your focus to something you can<\/span>
actually examine carefully in eight pages.<\/span> <\/span>For example, women\u2019s reproductive rights would be<\/span>
too broad of an issue, but recent legal disputes over California\u2019s Crisis Pregnancy Centers and<\/span>

As with other assignments in this course, you will write for a specific audience: the University at<\/span>
Albany community. As such, you should explain important concepts to your<\/span> <\/span>readers (who are<\/span>
intellectually curious, but who have different knowledge bases and areas of expertise); you<\/span>
should also seek to persuade readers that your per<\/span>spectives are worth considering. This essay<\/span>
asks you<\/span> <\/span>to join a conversation that is already takin<\/span>g<\/span> <\/span>place and to share your insights or<\/span>
suggestions.<\/span> <\/span>Your ultimate goal is to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the conversation,<\/span>
while also working to<\/span> <\/span>consider the ways<\/span> <\/span>your own<\/span> <\/span>thoughts<\/span> <\/span>add something new to a conversation<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
