Once you’ve chosen a source, <\/span>your paper will follow a very simple <\/span>four-paragraph <\/span>model. <\/span>\n<\/p>\n


<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

First, <\/span>you\u2019ll want to introduce the general topic and the source you will be writing about. This <\/span>short <\/span>intro paragraph should include <\/span>your<\/span> paper\u2019s thesis, or main argument. For these papers, the thesis will be the point that you will come to in the final paragraph about what we can learn about the past from this document.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n


<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

Next, <\/span>write a paragraph that <\/span>summarize<\/span>s<\/span> the source.<\/span> Try to keep this brief, maybe \u00bd of a page.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n


<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

Next,<\/span> write a paragraph in which <\/span>you<\/span> explain how <\/span>the source<\/span> fits into <\/span>the <\/span>historical context<\/span> of the time it was written<\/span>. <\/span>Here you want to e<\/span>xplain <\/span>what was going on at t<\/span>he time<\/span> that is related to the subject of the sources. <\/span><\/p>\n

Primary Source Analysis Papers Assignment<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The fourth and final paragraph should <\/span>connect it to a passage from our<\/span> American Yawp<\/span> textbook<\/span> material<\/span>. By “connect,” I mean use the source’s evidence to refute, support, <\/span>or otherwise <\/span>contend with a specific passage of<\/span> your choice from the textbook.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This is the most important and difficult part of these papers. <\/span>\n<\/p>\n


<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

When analyzing the source, try to focus on the question of what we<\/span> can<\/span> learn about the period in question from the source. What does analyzing the source teach us about the past?<\/span> The answer to one of these questions will be your thesis<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Whenever possible (and especially in the <\/span>second<\/span> and <\/span>fourth<\/span> paragraphs described above<\/span>)<\/span> use quoted material from the source itself to back up the assertions you make. Use quotes as evidence to prove your points. But don\u2019t forget to explain to the reader how the quote proves the point you are making.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

You shouldn\u2019t do<\/span> any outside research<\/span> for this paper<\/span>. <\/span>Don\u2019t <\/span>spend any time wandering the web or browsing the library databases to complete the assignment. All you\u2019ll really need is a primary source <\/span>and the textbook. Both of which you\u2019ll find at <\/span>americanyawp.com<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>\n<\/p>\n

When using information from either the textbook or the primary source, you need to provide proper citation. For this assignment, you can use any of the three major styles (MLA, APA, or Chicago). <\/span>\n<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll want to use in-text citation whenever <\/span>you use information from either the primary source or the textbook. <\/span>\n<\/p>\n
