Title: Journal Entry #3 The Last Supper<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Watch the <\/span>Lecture: Italy in the Sixteenth Century<\/a> <\/span>first before starting. The focus of this Journal Entry is<\/span> <\/span>The Last Supper <\/em>by Leonardo da Vinci. <\/span><\/p>\n

Line and Emotion<\/span>

\n<\/span>Line quality can
\nexpress a range of emotions, fragility, roughness, anger, whimsy, vigor…<\/span> <\/span>In his Last Supper,
\nda Vinci has used a combination of vertical, horizontal and diagonal<\/span> <\/span>lines to arrange the
\nscene. Jesus and his disciples, designed with mostly rounded lines,<\/span> <\/span>are seated at the
\ntable in a room with windows, all composed from straight and diagonal<\/span> <\/span>lines.<\/span>

\n<\/span>One of the things
\nLeonardo uses his lines here to do, particularly the diagonal ones, is<\/span> <\/span>direct where we
\nlook. The lines all point to the center of the picture where the oval face<\/span> <\/span>of Jesus is framed
\nby a window.<\/span> <\/span>The lines work to make sure we know who is the most important character
\nin this story.<\/span> <\/span>Leonardo’s lines also balance the painting, so that the setting on the
\nright-hand side of<\/span>

\n<\/span>Jesus is echoed on
\nthe left, even though the figures and faces are different. The painting,<\/span> <\/span>we say, is
\nsymmetrical, and the boundaries you can see or imagine that equally divide<\/span> <\/span>balanced or
\nreflecting forms are known as lines of symmetry.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Color Blue<\/span>

\n<\/span>Almost all of the
\ndisciples, as well as Jesus, are wearing Blue. Particularly at the time of <\/span>the Renaissance,
\nthis acknowledged than extraordinary figures, although in reality the <\/span>opposite was true.<\/span>

\n<\/span>
<\/span><\/p>\n

Bright Color
\nSurrounding Christ<\/span>

\n<\/span>Jesus is the only
\none in the room wearing a particularly bright shades of reddish\/orange.<\/span>

\n<\/span>While some think
\nthis may have been in order to distinguish Christ from the rest, many <\/span>also believe that it
\nmay have been foreshadowing for the tragic events that would befall <\/span>him.<\/span>

\n<\/span>
<\/span><\/p>\n

The Use of White
\nCloth<\/span>

\n<\/span>The table they are
\neating on is also draped with white cloth, which may reference the <\/span>purity and emotional
\ncleanliness of Christ. Tablecloths certainly would not have been <\/span>used by Jesus and
\nthe Disciples.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Iconology \u2013 an

\n<\/span>Da Vinci portrays
\nChrist\u2019s final meal with his apostles before Judas identifies Christ to the <\/span>authorities who
\narrest him. The Last Supper (a Passover Seder), is remembered for two events:<\/span>

\n<\/span>Christ says to his
\napostles \u201cOne of you will betray me,\u201d and the apostles react, each according to <\/span>his own personality.
\nReferring to the Gospels, Leonardo depicts Philip asking \u201cLord, is it <\/span>I?\u201d Christ replies,
\n\u201cHe that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me\u201d <\/span>(Matthew 26). We see
\nChrist and Judas simultaneously <\/span><\/p>\n

reaching toward a plate that lies between <\/span>them, even as Judas
\ndefensively backs away. Leonardo also simultaneously depicts Christ <\/span>blessing the bread
\nand saying to the apostles \u201cTake, eat; this is my body\u201d and blessing the wine <\/span>and saying \u201cDrink
\nfrom it all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out
\nfor <\/span>the forgiveness of
\nsins\u201d (Matthew 26). These words are the founding moment of the sacrament of <\/span>the Eucharist (the
\nmiraculous transformation of the bread and wine into the body and blood of <\/span>Christ).<\/span>
<\/span>
<\/span><\/p>\n

The Apostles
\nIdentified: <\/span>Leonardo\u2019s Last
\nSupper is dense with symbolic references. Attributes identify each apostle. For <\/span>example, Judas
\nIscariot is recognized both as he reaches to toward a plate beside Christ
\n(Matthew <\/span>26) and because he
\nclutches a purse containing his reward for identifying Christ to the
\nauthorities <\/span>the following day.
\nPeter, who sits beside Judas, holds a knife in his right hand, foreshadowing <\/span>that Peter will
\nsever the ear of a soldier as he attempts to protect Christ from arrest.<\/span>

\n<\/span>
<\/span><\/p>\n

The Heavenly Realm: <\/span>Christ is shown as
\nthe gateway to the heavenly landscape behind him that is associated with <\/span>paradise. It has
\nbeen suggested that this heavenly sanctuary can only be reached through Christ. <\/span><\/p>\n

“Leonardo
\nimagined, and has succeeded in expressing, the desire that has entered the
\nminds of the <\/span>apostles to know who
\nis betraying their Master. So in the face of each one may be seen love, fear, <\/span>indignation, or
\ngrief at not being able to understand the meaning of Christ; and this excites
\nno less <\/span>astonishment than
\nthe obstinate hatred and treachery to be seen in Judas.” (Giorgio Vasari,

Topic 8: The Context of the Last
\nSupper<\/span>

\n<\/span>1. Consider the
\ncontext and reception of da Vinci\u2019s the Last Supper from a critical <\/span>perspective. For

\npolitical, and economic (environmental) factors that influence <\/span>artists and their
\ncreations<\/span>

<\/span><\/p>\n

Under which
\nConditions did da Vinci begin the Last Supper?<\/span>

\n<\/span>In 1482, Leonardo
\narrived in Milan bearing a gift for Ludovico Sforza from the Florentine ruler, <\/span>Lorenzo the
\nMagnificent. Ludovico sought to transform Milan into a center of humanist
\nlearning <\/span>to rival Florence.
\nThe French king, Francis I, invited him to his court and about 1516, Leonardo <\/span>settled in a manor. <\/span>Da Vinci started the
\nLast Supper at a most inopportune time. Just a <\/span>year or so before he
\nbegan the project, King Louis XII of France invaded Italy. This was <\/span>a terrible tragedy
\nfor Italy, the beginning of many decades of invasion and warfare. On a <\/span>personal level,
\nLouis’s invasion meant that Leonardo lost a commission on which he had<\/span>worked for eight or
\nten years, an enormous bronze equestrian monument. In wartime, <\/span>bronze would be
\ncollected and melted into gun metal. Da Vinci didn’t just lose money <\/span>because of the war.
\nThe statue would have brought him the acclaim and artistic prestige <\/span>he craved. He
\nreceived the task of painting the Last Supper as compensation, but it must <\/span>have seemed a poor
\nsubstitute.”<\/span>

\n<\/span>What was position
\nwas the artist in when he began this painting?<\/span>

\n<\/span>We think of
\nLeonardo, quite rightly, as an all-conquering genius, but in fact he had his <\/span>share of
\ndisappointments and failures. In 1494, da Vinci was 42 years old. At that
\npoint, <\/span>the Renaissance man
\nhad been judged by some contemporaries to have wasted his <\/span>potential. He had
\nfailed to finish a number of commissions, and many people found him <\/span>unreliable as a
\nresult. One poet mocked him, saying that he had barely managed to finish <\/span>a single picture in
\nten years. Leonardo was desperate to create what he called a ‘work of <\/span>fame’ \u2014 something
\nthat would make him famous for posterity. He finally gained it with <\/span>the Last Supper.<\/span>

<\/span><\/p>\n

The Reception and
\nReputation of the Last Supper during da Vinci\u2019s Lifetime<\/span>

\n<\/span>While today da Vinci
\nis remembered for the breadth of his artwork, writings, and <\/span>inventions, the Last
\nSupper was the painting that truly cemented his reputation during his <\/span>own time. The image
\nquickly gained famous across Europe. It was one of the most <\/span>copied the painting
\nof the next century \u2014 not only in paint, but also in marble, wax and <\/span>terracotta. Many
\nwanted a version of it. Leonardo had finally created the work of fame <\/span>about which he
\ndreamed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
