The Last Supper (a Passover Seder), is remembered for two events:<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Christ says to his<br \/>\napostles \u201cOne of you will betray me,\u201d and the apostles react, each according to&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">his own personality.<br \/>\nReferring to the Gospels, Leonardo depicts Philip asking \u201cLord, is it&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">I?\u201d Christ replies,<br \/>\n\u201cHe that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">(Matthew 26). We see<br \/>\nChrist and Judas simultaneously&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">reaching toward a plate that lies between&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">them, even as Judas<br \/>\ndefensively backs away. Leonardo also simultaneously depicts Christ&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">blessing the bread<br \/>\nand saying to the apostles \u201cTake, eat; this is my body\u201d and blessing the wine&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">and saying \u201cDrink<br \/>\nfrom it all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out<br \/>\nfor&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">the forgiveness of<br \/>\nsins\u201d (Matthew 26). These words are the founding moment of the sacrament of&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">the Eucharist (the<br \/>\nmiraculous transformation of the bread and wine into the body and blood of&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Christ).<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">The Apostles<br \/>\nIdentified:&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Leonardo\u2019s Last<br \/>\nSupper is dense with symbolic references. Attributes identify each apostle. For&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">example, Judas<br \/>\nIscariot is recognized both as he reaches to toward a plate beside Christ<br \/>\n(Matthew&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">26) and because he<br \/>\nclutches a purse containing his reward for identifying Christ to the<br \/>\nauthorities&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">the following day.<br \/>\nPeter, who sits beside Judas, holds a knife in his right hand, foreshadowing&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">that Peter will<br \/>\nsever the ear of a soldier as he attempts to protect Christ from arrest.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">The Heavenly Realm:&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Christ is shown as<br \/>\nthe gateway to the heavenly landscape behind him that is associated with&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">paradise. Just a&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">year or so before he<br \/>\nbegan the project, King Louis XII of France invaded Italy. This was&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">a terrible tragedy<br \/>\nfor Italy, the beginning of many decades of invasion and warfare. On a&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">personal level,<br \/>\nLouis&#8217;s invasion meant that Leonardo lost a commission on which he had<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">worked for eight or<br \/>\nten years, an enormous bronze equestrian monument. In wartime,&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">bronze would be<br \/>\ncollected and melted into gun metal. Da Vinci didn&#8217;t just lose money&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">because of the war.<br \/>\nThe statue would have brought him the acclaim and artistic prestige&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">he craved. He<br \/>\nreceived the task of painting the Last Supper as compensation, but it must&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">have seemed a poor<br \/>\nsubstitute.&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">What was position<br \/>\nwas the artist in when he began this painting?<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">We think of<br \/>\nLeonardo, quite rightly, as an all-conquering genius, but in fact he had his&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">share of<br \/>\ndisappointments and failures. In 1494, da Vinci was 42 years old. At that<br \/>\npoint,&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">the Renaissance man<br \/>\nhad been judged by some contemporaries to have wasted his&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">potential. He had<br \/>\nfailed to finish a number of commissions, and many people found him&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">unreliable as a<br \/>\nresult. One poet mocked him, saying that he had barely managed to finish&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">a single picture in<br \/>\nten years. Leonardo was desperate to create what he called a &#8216;work of&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">fame&#8217; \u2014 something<br \/>\nthat would make him famous for posterity.
