\u201cComplex society and today\u2019s <\/span>expectations of abundant materialism comprise a relatively brief and
\nlate chapter in a story that is really, really long. <\/span>Earth is really old. <\/span>(How old exactly?) Christian
\nCreationism narratives <\/span>\u2013 <\/span>predicated as they are on <\/span>design <\/span>in Nature <\/span>\u2013 <\/span>cannot be reconciled with
\nthat scientific fact. Such narratives are a construct and ritual of people who fear or else see a need
\nto reject science, especially the coldness and alienating exoticness of <\/span>natural selection<\/span>. (Can
\nhumans really be said to have evolved from algae? Is <\/span>order <\/span>in Nature merely that? <\/span>\u2013 <\/span>order absent
\ndesign that just happened to turn out the way it did by chance\/luck?) <\/span>Indeed, in seeking to bring warmth, grace, and comforting meaning to humanity, the Christian
\nnarrative <\/span>of a \u2018young world\u2019 is <\/span>short-sighted in other ways: it places humans at center stage of the
\nUniverse\/Cosmos; it encourages adherents to take civilization for granted (as a gift from God);
\nand it encourages adherents to dismiss climate change (as <\/span>\u2018only God can <\/span>truly imperil <\/span>Earth…\u2019).\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n
