Note:  This assignment\u2019s topic and study is very complex. The history of the discussion in biblical scholarship is quite large and full of controversy.  The goal of this study is to lead you into awareness of some of the complexities when interpreting the Pentateuch.  You may want to refer to this week\u2019s  optional article by Dennis Olson as he discusses the problem.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Carefully read the biblical material in Exodus 20-23, and the textbook discussions of the Decalogue and the book of the Covenant (Torah Story<\/em> <\/span>Chapter 14; <\/span>From Paradise to the Promised Land<\/em> <\/span>Chapter 15).  Pay particular attention to the contrast between Apodictic and Casuistic law (Torah Story 250,251).<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Write a Comparative Analysis of the Decalogue in relation to the Book of the Covenant in which you answer the following questions:<\/span><\/li>\n

    1. How are the two legal sections alike? <\/span><\/li>\n
    2. How are they different? <\/span><\/li>\n
    3. What  relationship between the two sections are you able to see? Both texts provide detailed content analysis that should facilitate your work. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
    4. What is the best example you see to illustrate your statements? Choose one section of both legal collections to illustrate clearly your understanding of the relationship between the two.  (For instance, the command not to steal (20:15) with the relevant commands in the Book of the Covenant).<\/span><\/li>\n
    5. What do you conclude about the function and purpose of the two collections of legal material for the narrator\u2019s audience?<\/span><\/li>\n
    6. In what way(s) would both or either be relevant to a Contemporary Christian?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      • The paper must be double-spaced, either MLA or Turabian Style, and use Times New Roman 12 font.<\/span><\/li>\n

      • Be sure to cite any information taken from the texts. You may use outside sources–not internet websites–such as commentaries, other introductions, or scholarly articles from peer-reviewed journals.  <\/span><\/li>\n
      • All citations must be in either MLA or Turabian form and a Works Cited page must be included.<\/span><\/li>\n
