  1. CHOOSE A WELL-KNOWN<\/span> POEM OR SONG LYRICS. (It cannot<\/span> be something written by you or a friend.)<\/strong> Do not use a Haiku or Tanka, as they are too short. Make sure your selection allows you to find the information needed for your presentation.<\/li>\n
  2. CREATE 13 SLIDES OR 13 SEPARATE PAGES OF A WORD DOCUMENT<\/li>\n
  3. EACH SLIDE\/PAGE<\/strong> NEEDS TO HAVE A BACKGROUND AND\/OR PICTURE THAT MATCHES THE CONTENT. (Do not use the same background or picture for all slides\/pages.) <\/li>\n
  4. THE ITEMS THAT NEED TO BE ON EACH SLIDE\/PAGE ARE LISTED BELOW. (FULL EXPLANATIONS ARE IN THE POETRY WORKSHOP<\/strong>.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Narrative \u2013 poem that tells a story<\/p>\n

    Epic Poem \u2013 long, narrative poem about heroic deeds<\/p>\n

    Ballad \u2013 a song with a plot oftentimes about love<\/p>\n

    Lyric \u2013 no plot; rather just the speaker\u2019s feelings on a topic<\/p>\n

    Ode \u2013 commemorative in nature; a poem often written to something or someone ex. Ode to a Grecian Urn<\/p>\n

    Elegy \u2013 somber toned poem, lament for the dead<\/p>\n

    Sonnet \u2013 very specific formed poem that has 14 lines and focuses on a central idea<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Types of Sound Devices:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Alliteration \u2013 repetition of consonant letter at the beginning of adjacent or nearby words. (Example: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.)<\/p>\n

    Assonance \u2013 repetition of vowel sounds within adjacent or nearby words.<\/p>\n

    (Example: So old it is that no man knows how and why the first poems came.<\/p>\n

    Consonance \u2013 repetition of consonant sound with adjacent or nearby words.<\/p>\n

    Example: Pitter and patter\/chuckle, fickle, kick)<\/p>\n

    Rhyme \u2013 Rhyming words have a different beginnings, but the same middle and ending sounds.<\/p>\n

    (Examples: dreary\/wearly, rapping, tapping, song\/wrong)<\/p>\n

    <\/strong><\/p>\n

    Types of Figurative Language:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Metaphor \u2013 comparison between two unrelated items that share common characteristics.<\/p>\n

    (Example: Love is a rose.)<\/p>\n

    Simile \u2013 comparison between two different things using \u201clike\u201d or \u201cas\u201d<\/p>\n

    (Example: Her kisses are like wine.  She is as innocent as an angel)<\/p>\n

    Personification \u2013 giving an idea, thing, or animal, human characteristics<\/p>\n

    (Example: The sun smiled down on us.)<\/p>\n

    Sensory details \u2013 details that reflect the 5 senses – visual, auditory, oral, touch, smell)<\/p>\n

    <\/strong><\/p>\n

    Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Sight. Blurry, dim.<\/p>\n

    Sound. Cheer, shriek<\/p>\n

    Touch: bumpy, chilly<\/p>\n

    Taste: bitter, delicious<\/p>\n

    Smell: foul-smelling, fragrant<\/p>\n

    Hyperbole \u2013 Exaggeration for effect<\/p>\n

    (Example: He was 10 feet tall. Her smile was a mile wide.)<\/p>\n

    NOTE THAT FOR VISUAL APPEAL, YOU MUST INCLUDE SEVERAL PICTURES THAT REFLECT THE THEME OF THE POEM. (These can be used as backgrounds for your slides or video, or can be put elsewhere in the presentation.)<\/p>\n

    CITATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

    In-text Citations<\/strong><\/p>\n

    For poems\/songs, use the author’s last name and the line number of the poem. You may also use the year it was written for songs.<\/p>\n

    Here’s an example of an in-text citation:<\/p>\n

    (Frost 7).<\/p>\n

    If you used more than one line of a poem, you can reference the lines like this: (Frost 7-8).<\/p>\n

    Quote example with in-text citation:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \u201c\u201cSo dawn goes down to day\u201d (Frost 7).<\/p>\n

    OR<\/p>\n

    \u201cSo dawn goes down to day \/ Nothing gold can stay\u201d (Frost 7-8).<\/p>\n

    The slash represents a line break in a poem. You can use the slash in between multiple lines.<\/p>\n
