Comparison\/Contrast Writing Assignment Parameters<\/h1>\n

For this assignment, you will compose a comparison and
\ncontrast paper. Please review the chapter on this method of development in your
\ntext. The page requirement is the same as your descriptive narrative, 1 \u00bd to 3
\npages long in MLA format. Below is more information about compare and contrast.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Comparison and contrast are processes of identifying how
\nideas, people, or things are alike (comparison) and how they are different (contrast).
\nSuch assignments require you to move beyond mere description by thinking deeply
\nabout the items being compared, identifying meaningful relationships between
\nthem, and deciding which qualities are most significant. This process involves
\nevaluating, analyzing, and synthesizing your findings and presenting them in a
\nmeaningful, interesting, and logical way.<\/span><\/p>\n

Structure<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Provide a clear introduction and thesis that not only spells
\nout the topic and the opinion but that also answers the question, \u201cSo what?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Link your ideas or thoughts with effective transitions that
\ndemonstrates the relationships between the subjects. Conclude the paper by
\nsummarizing and analyzing the findings, once again reminding the reader of the
\nrelationships you have noted between your subjects and\/or categories. <\/span><\/p>\n

Transitional Markers to Indicate Comparison and Contrast:<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Transitional
\nmarkers are words or phrases that show the connections and relationships among
\nideas. They are often placed at or near the beginning of a sentence or paragraph.
\nThere are many such words, but here are some of the most useful terms:<\/span><\/p>\n

\nin comparison, similarly, likewise, in the same way, parallel to, correlate,
\nidentically, akin to, consistent with, also, too, analogous to, correspondingly<\/span><\/p>\n

\ncontrast, however, on the other hand, nevertheless, although, counter to, on
\nthe contrary, conversely, rather than, in opposition to, opposite of <\/span><\/p>\n

\nis a sample of an introduction from a literary compare and contrast paper

Because America itself is still a relatively young nation,
\n its poetry, too, lacks the years of history and growth that have defined the
\n voices of other nations. However, within the past century, American poetry
\n has developed into a distinctive and accomplished art of its own. The
\n creation of this poetic voice is often attributed to Walt Whitman, who has
\n been coined \u201cthe father of American poetry.\u201d His revolutionary style and
\n untraditional subject matter, exemplified in his renowned poem \u201cSong of
\n Myself,\u201d have paved the way for future generations of American writers.
\n Furthermore, his unique use of the line and breath has had a great influence
\n on many poets\u2019 own work, particularly the writing of the more contemporary<\/b>
\n poet Allen Ginsberg, whose controversial poem \u201cHowl\u201d echoes<\/b> many of
\n the characteristics of Whitman\u2019s verse. *However,
\n while the form and content of \u201cHowl\u201d may have been influenced by \u201cSong of
\n Myself,\u201d Ginsberg\u2019s poem signifies a transformation of Whitman\u2019s use of the
\n line, his first-person narration, and his vision of America.<\/span> As
\n Whitman\u2019s sprawling lines open outward in the voice of a cosmic speaker who
\n creates a positive view of America, Ginsberg\u2019s poem does the opposite<\/b>,
\n using long lines that close inward to mimic the suffocation and madness that
\n characterize the vision of America that he presents through the voice of a
\n prophetic speaker.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n

Your
\nfirst paragraph is your introduction, and your last paragraph is your
\nconclusion. The introduction generally tells the reader what you will be
\nwriting about and contains the thesis statement. The thesis statement<\/i>
\nshould clearly identify what you are comparing or contrasting. The conclusion
\nties the entire essay together. What goes between these two paragraphs is
\ncalled the body paragraphs. <\/span><\/p>\n

This paper will be evaluated for correct use of mechanics, spelling,
\nand punctuation as well as content, unity, organization, and so forth. 
\nUse a variety of sentence structures. This paper will also be evaluated for
\ncorrect use of MLA format: Times New Roman 12-point font, double spaced, and so
\nforth. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Make sure the paper has a strong introduction with a clear thesis
\nstatement.  Your thesis statement is
\nnot just the topic of your paper. It is your opinion about the topic. A narrow
\ntopic + your opinion about the topic = an effective thesis statement. <\/i>The
\nbody of the paper should fully compare and\/or contrast the chosen topic while
\ngiving vivid examples\/illustrations as support. Wrap up the paper with a
\nstrong, significant conclusion. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The paper can be on any topic you find interesting to
\ncompare or contrast (but, please, keep it PG-13). Likewise, it needs to have a
\nclear thesis: an opinion about the topic being compared and or contrasted. For
\ninstance, if comparing a book version with a movie version, please state
\nclearly which one is superior and why. Do not straddle the fence. It will only
\nweaken your thesis and your entire paper. If your paper lacks a strong thesis, the
\npaper will not be successful.  <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Also, keep your readers in mind while writing. If it\u2019s
\nboring to you, chances are it\u2019s boring to readers. Make sure your paper answers the
\nquestions, \u201cSo what? And why should I care?\u201d If it\u2019s not significant, why write
\nabout it? <\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Seven possible topics are listed below for you to
\nchoose from if you need clearer direction. There are also topics to select from
\nin your text book. <\/span><\/p>\n

1.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>Compose
\na contrast paper about something in your life that has changed with time and
\nfamiliarity. <\/span><\/p>\n

2.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>Compare
\nor contrast people from different cultures, including married couples from
\ndiffering ethnic backgrounds, friendships, or traveling or moving to another
\ncountry or another state.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>Compare\/contrast
\na book to its movie version.<\/span><\/p>\n

4.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>Compare\/contrast
\na remake of a movie to the original version.<\/span><\/p>\n

5.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>Compare\/contrast
\na person, place, or thing. Illustrate how it has either stayed the same
\n(compare) or how it has changed (contrast). <\/span><\/p>\n

6.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>Compare\/contrast
\ntwo literary characters in a story or novel.
