Overview<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Discussion
\nassignments for the comprehensive examinations and readings course
\nwill not be your typical discussion style. You will produce reading
\nnotes, using the template below,
\n<\/b>to
\nprepare for your comprehensive exams as an assignment and share them
\nwith the class in the discussion. Sharing and discussion of the
\nreading notes will facilitate a collaborative effort in reading texts
\nand comparing notes, in preparation for the comprehensive exams. You
\nwill comment and interact with your classmates in a discussion to
\nfurther explore the significance of the sources provided.\n<\/p>\n

While
\noften a means of hubris among history graduate students, please keep
\nin mind that a hallmark of professional, terminally degreed
\nhistorians is \u201ctalking shop\u201d about the works of other historians.
\n Of course, this is technically called \u201chistoriography.\u201d Please
\nuse the discussions to practice this technique of casually debating
\nand appreciating competing, historical interpretations. Engage the
\npoints and counter-points of other historians laterally within a
\ngiven topic.<\/p>\n

Part
\nof your comprehensive examination at the end of this course requires
\nyou to formally and clearly synthesize major and minor
\ninterpretations (and their research methodologies). Consider the
\ndiscussion replies as practicing \u2013 informally \u2013 that part of the
\nexam.<\/p>\n

Instructions<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

For
\nyour collaborative discussion, you will be replying to two of your
\nclassmates posted reading notes. Your replies are to be at 500 words
\nminimum and engage the material. This is not a review of the author’s
\nability to produce the work but an analysis of the sources, how they
\ncompare to authors that you have read, and a critic of the evaluation
\nof the material. The purpose of this is to help you engage additional
\nresources that you may not have to be in contact with and help
\nprepare you for the comprehensive exam.\n<\/p>\n
