Each essay should be 1500 words long. The qualities
\nlooked for will be: breadth of reading and use of academic sources, awareness
\nof the context of the topic, quality and clarity of argument, links with the
\nwider issues and themes of the module and appropriate referencing. See Moodle

Synoptic Essay Questions<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n


<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

NB. <\/span><\/b>The essay is <\/span>synoptic<\/span><\/i><\/b>. This means it should <\/span>demonstrate your broader understanding of all the themes studied in the first half
\nof the module<\/span><\/span><\/b>, and your ability to synthesize these with
\nin-depth knowledge of specific aspects of Soviet politics to formulate a
\nconvincing argument. In other words, ensure you show understanding of the
\nfunctioning and contradictions of the Soviet system and the main academic
\ndebates about these. <\/span><\/p>\n

Essays should be grounded in the academic literature<\/i> on the subject and fully referenced. The weekly
\nreading list<\/u> will provide you with the best starting point. <\/span><\/b>After this has been
\nexhausted, you should locate other relevant
\nsources using databases like IBSS and Academic Search Complete (find under
