<\/span>Each paper should contain a clear, analytical thesis statement.<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Develop your argument through close reading and textual analysis using the SIEL method \u2013 <b style=\"cursor: auto;\">State, Illustrate, Explain, Link &#8212; <\/b>that you have been practicing in journal entries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 8px; margin-left: 0px; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; cursor: auto;\"><b style=\"cursor: auto;\">Your papers should follow MLA formatting; margin-bottom: 8px; margin-left: 36px; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; cursor: auto;\">A thesis statement is a clear, concise Statement of your argument \u2013 what you want your essay to illustrate or prove.<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp; <\/span>It should appear at or near the end of your introduction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 8px; margin-left: 36px; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; cursor: auto;\">Thesis development relies on effective and logical organization and close reading(s) of the text(s) you have selected.<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Your paper should evolve as a development and exploration of your thesis statement through discussion and analysis of the text(s).<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Support your assertions about the text with paraphrases, examples and\/or brief quotations from the text, as you have been doing in journal entries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 8px; margin-left: 0px; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; cursor: auto;\"><i style=\"cursor: auto;\">Support analytical claims with textual evidence &#8212; ILLUSTRATE<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 8px; margin-left: 36px; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; cursor: auto;\">Analytical claims are interpretations or ideas regarding the creative text (story, poem, example, novel, etc.).<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Examples, quotes, paraphrases, etc. provide the textual evidence that supports the specific claims you make.<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp; <\/span>This means that your analysis relies on close reading in which you link your ideas and statements about the text(s) to specific words, phrases, lines, images, paragraphs in the the text itself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 8px; margin-left: 0px; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; cursor: auto;\"><i style=\"cursor: auto;\">Logical structure and organization &#8212; EXPLAIN<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 8px; margin-left: 36px; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; cursor: auto;\">Coherent paragraphs have strong topic sentences that develop systematically throughout the paper.<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Each paragraph should have a clear main point as well as effective transitions that provide a sense of coherence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 8px; margin-left: 36px; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; cursor: auto;\">At the sentence level, you should demonstrate clear phrasing and thoughtful word choice.<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp; <\/span>You should also clearly understand and avoid common sentence errors:<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp; <\/span>fragments, run-on or fused sentences, comma splices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 8px; margin-left: 0px; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; cursor: auto;\"><i style=\"cursor: auto;\">Establish clear transitions between paragraphs \u2013 LINK<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; cursor: auto;\">A strong conclusion makes an assessment\/evaluation of your original question\/topic, but does not simply restate your thesis statement.<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp; <\/span>The conclusion makes a point that ties the points you have made together; and gives the reader a \u201csend-off\u201d or parting statement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 8px; margin-left: 0px; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; cursor: auto;\"><b style=\"cursor: auto;\">WRITING TIP:<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp; <\/span><\/b>I always recommend that students outline BEFORE they write. <span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Begin your outline with your thesis statement.<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp; <\/span>The major points that you make to support are the Roman numerals \u2013 I, II, III \u2013 in the outline.<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp; <\/span>The supporting evidence, subheadings \u2013 A,B,C \u2013 should be stated under each major point.<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;
