Be sure that the works that you select for this essay are drawn from the<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><strong style=\"font-weight: bold; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><u style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">literary works that you have been assigned to read this semester.&nbsp; Do not write about works that we have not read<\/u><\/strong><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">.&nbsp; Though you may draw from the introductory materials (author biographies) and background readings (Example: \u201cBeginnings to 1820\u201d) these are secondary sources and will not be the primary focus of your literary analysis.&nbsp; Focus your analysis on the works of American literature that we have read.&nbsp;<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><strong style=\"font-weight: bold; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">You must incorporate research information into your essay by using at least two sources in addition to works from the Norton Anthology.<\/strong><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; Be sure that you formulate a solid thesis statement in your essay and that you support the claims of your analysis with evidence from the texts in question by paraphrasing and quoting from your sources.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><strong style=\"font-weight: bold; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Remember, a piece of literature is an intellectual creation made of words. If you don&#8217;t take opportunities to present the words of an author in your essay and to analyze them, you have missed the mark.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Your essay must be written in 12-point Times New Roman font and in MLA format (See the \u201cCourse Introduction\u201d module), with appropriate documentation. Your works cited page does not count towards your total page count.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Avoid dubious and limited web sites like the plague (Examples:&nbsp;Wikipedia, dictionary.com, sparnotes.com, enotes.com, shmoop.com, 123helpme.com, cheatingloser.com, etc.).&nbsp; Sources like Sparknotes or Cliffsnotes or even Wikipedia are fine to consult for general ideas, but they lack depth, specificity and reliability, so you should only use them to gather ideas that will guide you to better sources.
