Members<br \/>\nand units in the organization are grouped into functional departments such as<br \/>\nmarketing and production. In U-from, none of the functional areas can survive without<br \/>\nthe others. <\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><u>Conglomerate (H-from) design<\/u> \u2013 (H for holding, as in holding<br \/>\ncompany), used by organizations made up of a set of unrelated businesses. This<br \/>\ndesign is essentially a holding company that results from unrelated<br \/>\ndiversification. This design is based loosely on the product of<br \/>\ndepartmentalization. Each business or set of businesses is operated by a<br \/>\ngeneral manager who is responsible for its profits or losses, and each general<br \/>\nmanager functions independently of others. <\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><u>Divisional (M-From) Design <\/u>\u2013 a product form of organization<br \/>\nis also used; in contrast to the H-from approach, however, the divisions are<br \/>\nrelated. The divisional design or M-form (Multidivision) approach is based on<br \/>\nmultiple businesses in related areas operating within a larger organization<br \/>\nframework. This design results from a strategy of related diversification. Some<br \/>\nactivities are extremely decentralized down to the division level; others are centralized<br \/>\nat the corporate level. <\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><u>Matrix Design <\/u>\u2013 based on two overlapping bases of<br \/>\ndepartmentalization. The foundation of a matrix is a set of functional<br \/>\ndepartments. A set of product groups, or temporary departments, is then superimposed<br \/>\nacross the functional departments. Employees in a matrix are simultaneously members<br \/>\nof a functional department (such as engineering) and of a project team. At the<br \/>\ntop of the organization are functional units headed by VPs of engineering, production,<br \/>\nfinance, and marketing. Each of these managers has several subordinates. Along<br \/>\nthe side of the organization are several positions called project manager.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><u>Hybrid Desgin<\/u>&nbsp;\u2013 two or more of the common forms of<br \/>\norganization design.
