Throughout the readings this week, there were two major themes that were highlighted related to family. The first is related to the experience of coming out to family or choosing to not disclose LGBTQ identities to family. This decision and experience can influence the sense of safety and connection to values and culture that are the foundation of family in general. The second theme is related to the creation of families-of-choice and roles these families play in the lives of LGBTQ persons.<\/p>\n

For this week\u2019s assignment, you will consider a culture that you are not that familiar with and design a research study that integrates an aspect of family with an individuals\u2019 LGBTQ identity. Your paper will take on this format (and this outline can be used as sub-headings if you wish).<\/p>\n

  1. Research question (1-3 sentences)<\/li>\n
  2. Purpose of the study \u2013 a background of what you hope to accomplish with the research and how you arrived at the research question (2-3 paragraphs)<\/li>\n
  3. Background on family \u2013provide research on this aspect of family that you are exploring (2-3 paragraphs). For example, your question might include \u201csafety\u201d as a family experience. This section will build in research that identifies family as a place of safety.<\/li>\n
  4. Background on culture \u2013 Provide research on this community\/culture that you are interested in and how the culture receives LGBTQ persons and how that might influence the dynamics between LGBTQ persons and their families (2-3 paragraphs). <\/li>\n
  5. Expected findings \u2013 What you anticipate your research will show (2-3 paragraphs).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
